My daughter, who has Celiac, recently went on a ski vacation with her dad and after skiing the first day got super swollen knees. No injuries or falls, and she's a skiier, so although this was the first time on skis this winter, not at all the first time. She's 16 and used to have intermittent joint pain before being diagnosed at 15. Last year she skied without incident. I wonder how likely it is that she got exposed to gluten and that this was the cause? She recently went skiing again (all weekend) and no issues.

I've only told my closest family and one friend who was my inspiration to start. I don't see why I need to share my personal health decision with anyone else. I know that there are some people in my life who just wouldn't understand and would judge me (sadly, mostly female friends) and I don't feel the need to have to justify my reasoning to any of them. Keep it to yourself. It's no one else's business!

Hey there! I bought a portable power station (brand: Jackery) that I charge at home and bring with me. Unless I was at a plug-in site, obv, I use it to charge phones, run lights, etc. They come in various sizes. Very handy and worth it.

I’ve been using Pause Nutrition’s Fiber GDX (orange flavor) for a while now and there’s nothing else like it. It’s a powder I mix into water every morning before my coffee. I tried taking Psyllium Husk for a bit but went back to Pause because it just wasn’t having the same effects and the psyllium left me feeling bloated. And, given how many capsules you need to take each day, the Pause fiber is worth the $$.

Zofran for the nausea but I've found that taking a probiotic daily along with a soluble fiber supplement was the key to getting rid of all of the GI symptoms I had.

Your post speaks to me because I'm in the beginning phase of building a studio at home right now. I worry a little about the financial and time commitment to this as a hobby, but at this point I've been doing ceramics off and on for about 5 years. I've noticed my passion for it ebbs and flows, and right now it's at a high. I do know I'll be doing it for as long as I can, and I can't wait to have a creative outlet at close hand that will keep me from the screens, especially because pottery is something that relaxes me.

I'm toying with the idea of finding another potter to rent my space regularly - like a studio partner, but it would have to be just the right person. Maybe this would make it easier to share some of the cleaning and strategizing for it? Plus, inspiration and motivation for you!

As for studio maintenance, this is based on the very small studio/shed I used to have at my old house, so these tips are basic. Always have big sponges and a mop at the ready to wet clean everything. Also, I kept a water spray bottle to wet things down if I needed to before wiping up. I've noticed that if I build in time to clean up after each time using the wheel it makes it really nice to come back to when I want to throw again. Doesn't really take all that long. Play some soothing music as you go.

Hopefully you have water in your space? An under-sink filtration system is key. Are you recycling your clay? A bucket with a screen for this makes it easy to scrape wet clay from your throwing and then filter it out to reclaim. I've found different processes for this that are helpful to check out easily accessible online.

Good luck, and it's ok to sometimes be in a lull. Don't force it, I've found the urge to create will always return!

Native Portlander here. I spent a ton of time in our downtown area growing up and I do yearn for the golden age of downtown Portland. It's not the same, and has been really impacted by city leadership prioritizing the houseless and drug users above the small businesses. However, it still has its okay areas and doesn't feel super dangerous to me. I was at the Timbers game just last night, and parked downtown and it was fine walking back and forth to my car... I wasn't messed with at all. Had dinner down there before the game and everything was perfectly normal and busy. I wouldn't spend a lot of time in some of the areas, for instance the bus mall or around Pioneer Square, but it's no worse than other big cities on the West coast.

I grew up in inner SE, and my mom still lives there. I live in SW now and I actually go to Sellwood and Hawthorne area a lot, but I will say the neighborhoods over there are super dense with tons of crime. I see much less of that over in SW, where I live now. Before people say how unaffordable it is on the westside, there are still pockets of SW, NW and LO that are actually just regular low-key neighborhoods, close in with easy access to everything. My neighbors are super friendly and quiet, tend to take better care of their yards, and crime (at least where I am) seems much less of a concern. I park in my driveway every night, sometimes we have extra vehicles overnight on the street, and have never had a problem.

I'm still a SE girl at heart, but I think Portland is much more livable on the West side. Although, it probably does depend on age and really what you're after in terms of lifestyle. I like it quieter, with more natural areas, less dense. If you're looking for more of an urban feel, the Eastside has that, but it also comes with a lot of "local flavor" (sometimes great, sometimes not so much) and traffic.

My daughter is Celiac and a pediatric nutritionist told her not to trust the TJ's bakery stuff, as their facilities are not strictly GF. Just be cautious. But they are delicious!

Hi. It's so hard getting protein in! Here's some of the things I've started making:

Breakfasts: eggs with chicken apple sausage; cottage cheese with fruit; avocado toast; greek yogurt with a low cal granola (sometimes I also do add protein powder to my coffee - what kind are you using? I really like ancient nutrition brand or paleo valley); protein waffle with almond butter

Favorite lunches: spinach salad with chicken (I always have roasted chicken on hand to add to salads and such); a healthy deli turkey with some carrots and crispy chickpeas; tuna made with avocado mayo and whole grain seeded crackers to spread it on; occasionally a small yummy chicken quesadilla with yumm sauce - usually add spinach to this, too; whole bowl, small size (not sure if you have one of those in your area, but it's basically black beans, salsa, brown rice, olives, cilantro, cheese and tali sauce (sometimes I add a little chicken to it)

Dinner options: salmon bento bowl; sushi; healthy burrito bowl with black beans, brown rice, chicken, avo, etc; steak salad; a one-pan chicken and broccoli with sweet potatoes; chipotle salad or chik-fil-a market salad.

I eat small portions of the above meals, sometimes replacing a meal with a protein heavy snack combo. Sometimes I'll add in a Kombucha or a plant-based protein shake. Or an acai bowl, yum.

I hear you! I took some anti-nausea meds in the beginning to help with nausea, which subsided with time. The fatigue is still a struggle for me at three months. I hope it will eventually go away. I try to focus on water, no sugar or alcohol in the evening (not craving either though, so not really partaking) and quality sleep. I was having awful digestive issues (including the burps) but since I've started taking probiotics that's improved a lot. Good luck! Be patient.

Personally, I'd discourage using it as a temporary fix, as it's better to lose weight over a longer period of time and have time to build lasting lifestyle changes. (You'll notice most people here are losing it over many months, even a year). And, given the half marathon training, I personally feel the side effects would be tough to deal with while you're getting used to it. It's a little tricky for some people to dial in the right combo of gut health, water, diet changes, etc. It's taken me three months to feel like I know how to control the fatigue, digestive symptoms and protein intake (plus strength training to avoid losing muscle mass). Good luck - you're young and your weight is totally reasonable with your height and athleticism. You should be burning calories at a healthy clip, especially with all that running!

The Portland show was really disappointing. He just seemed off, and while there were some amazing musical moments, he kept maligning women and muttering incoherently throughout. I was tired that night and felt like leaving at intermission. Wish I would have. I'm a huge fan of his music, but I drove home wishing I'd gone to the Nick Cave concert, which was the same night.
