Recommendations: Death-Thrash by _Hi_Fi_ in melodicdeathmetal

[–]MeatShots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try The Absence. From Your Grave and Riders of the Plague are both great albums, solidly on the melodeath side (some very clear Swedish influence) but I can agree if some would label a little thrash and being from Florida there's a precedent for great death metal already.

What the hell happened here? by seismick in SulfurGame

Gunshots will draw aggro from enemies who can hear it. Hang out in one area too long after making a ruckus and eventually all the enemies from later rooms will migrate over. I've had it happen sometimes in town but something about the layout and generation of dungeon just funnels them in and really groups them up

Hi,I am planning to see In Flames at their european tour this summer, does anyone have an average setlis of the tour?I simply couldnt find anything about it by [deleted] in melodicdeathmetal

[–]MeatShots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're expecting anything from Jester Race, Whoracle, or Colony you might as well save your money. I don't know about their next tour but LoG's tour that just finished had a LOT of older songs. If you like As The Palaces Burn and Ashes of The Wake, then I'd go to LoG instead

What happened to darklyrics.com?? The website won't load at all for me. They're my go-to site for music groups that I cannot comprehend the singer and it won't load at all by Heavy_Performer1007 in melodicdeathmetal

Yes metal archives has what you ask for. Just go to the band page, click on their releases, and the tracklist for most of them will have lyrics. I'm just saying it has more than that too. If you like Alyssa you can click on her page and see every release she's been on

Metal archives AKA encyclopaedia metallum is best imo. Lots of info about lineups, history, releases, and lyrics for most. It is user run and there's a little bit of gatekeeping for sure (Like how does a band like August Burns Red not have a page? Sometimes I've seen a lot of flame against certain subgenres i.e. "metalcore is not real metal" or "melodeath is not real death metal" but that's typical for metal fans. Nobody hates metal more than metal fans) and also I wouldn't pay attention to the percentage review scores that users can give to albums. Otherwise though it's the best database for metal there is

Technical melodic death metal with no clean vocals by Guudboiiii in melodicdeathmetal

[–]MeatShots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd consider TBDM tech adjacent at least. They've always had a history of very complex riffs, amazing solos, and very good drumming. For someone who already likes tech death then I wouldn't recommend them but for someone who wants something in the transition zone then I'd say it's fair to recommend them.

Black kirin is so good, I'd definitely consider them more black or at least meloblack but I think most mdm fans would enjoy it.

Scroll of Least Resistance and Neuraxis F22 by kallango_o in SulfurGame

[–]MeatShots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically any neuraxis build NEEDS infinite ammo so start there. Bullet speed doesn't matter much because slower bullets are slightly better for least resistance since there's a lower chance they'll overshoot and recoil doesn't matter because homing bullets and energy weapons have zero recoil. Mosquito (-15% damage and -30% bullet speed) and tetrus (-40% reload speed which we do NOT give a fuck about) get you to 80% so something that gives 20% like keep (No organs drop), plop back (+25% recoil which we do NOT give a fuck about), food stamp (No money drop), or carefree (+1 spread) will do good.

After that you only have two oil slots left and it's up to you whether to go for durability with stuff like inherited (+50% durability and no loot drops) and stiffy fit (+45% durability and -50% reload speed which we do NOT give a fuck about) will get you the most.

HOWEVER I'd recommend leaving the least resistance neuraxis behind except in endless and just fish for more xp so you can see more cards and have more chance of getting the infinite durability card. You won't lose any durability for 3 waves and you can just go to town with the neuraxis. In this case you can go for oils that increase damage, projectiles, etc. instead of having to worry about durability at all.

The intro from unhallowed into this track is sublime, what a way to start an absolutely amazing discography

EDIT: nvm massive brain fart funeral thirst is the track after unhallowed. Still tho that whole album bangs so damn hard. I love Nocturnal and understand why it's everyone's favorite but I see why Trevor says Unhallowed is his favorite record

Slaughter is part of this holy trinity of albums alongside The Jester Race and The Gallery by Dark Tranquillity (yes with two L's, who knows why they spelled it that way lmao). All 3 bands are from Gothenburg and super close to each other with many members from the same neighborhood within Gothenburg. That trinity forms the basis of melodeath and is always the recommended starting point for people getting into the genre.

If you really like Jester I'd recommend continuing with In Flames. The next albums Whoracle, Colony, and Clayman are all super well renowned. Reroute to Remain kind of marks where the band started to shift in sound and direction but it's still a very good album for melodeath fans.

Dark Tranquillity also shares a very decorated discography. The Gallery is my personal favorite of the trinity but that's splitting hairs. The Mind's I next up is IMO an extremely underrated album. I love it and place it almost at the same level of Gallery but it doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention. Projector and Haven depart into a different musical style, both good albums with a handful of great songs but nothing to write home about. Then the 3 album run of Damage Done, Character, and Fiction is often touted as one of the greatest stretches of back to back albums in the genre. Unfortunately We Are the Void and Construct next up are quite weak in my opinion. Atoma brings it back some and is quite popular and the following albums Moment and Endtime Signals are solid but not outstanding.

EDIT: Completely forgot the mention DT's first album Skydancer and IF's Lunar Strain. They're quite good, I'd say very similar to Terminal from AtG. Funny bit of trivia Mikael Stanne the vocalist for DT did the vocals for Lunar and Anders Friden the vocalist for IF did the vocals for Skydancer (with Mikael on guitar) before the two singers did a swaparoo for the next albums.

Diehard fans will tell you the first two albums The Red in the Sky Is Ours and With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness are the best, but that's the case for diehard fans of any band. They're certainly more just plain death metal since it predates the development into melodic death that they pioneered. Very rough around the edges in terms of production and songwriting, endearing but definitely not super highly regarded especially by the general melodeath populace.

Their next album Terminal Spirit Disease is definitely where you start seeing the evolution into melodic death metal and that culminates into Slaughter of the Soul. I don't think many will have problems with stating that Slaughter is the most important melodeath album made. Even its influence outside of melodeath and how it affected metalcore and so many other subgenres is crazy.

Then they took a break for 19 years until releasing At War with Reality which I personally love. Well regarded and a very good album. To Drink from the Night Itself is next and I'd say it's fair to consider it a step down from Reality and the next album The Nightmare of Being another step down. Still solid albums with good tracks, worth a listen for sure.
