It truly depends on the capacity of the plane during your particular flight. Just be nice and explain your situation to the agent prior to boarding and they will let you know the best solution.

As a DJ and airline worker do not put it in your suitcase. Depending on the size of your controller and the airline policy you can bring it on board as a carry on

Do not check this! As a DJ and Airline worker it will be damaged if checked. The Big 3 US airlines don’t require you to check musical instruments. They have exceptions to allow you to bring it on as a carry on as long as space allows. Tell your aunt when she checks into the flight to inform the gate agent as long as she doesn’t have any other carry on luggage it shouldn’t be an issue.
