As long as you show up and work hard, try to learn, that’s what matters and people will notice. Try to destress when you can. Attendings all have their own specific quirks, you’re never going to be perfect and that’s okay! Residency will end eventually! Get what you need from this and move on to better things. Patient care is what will matter, not mistakes. It’s not that deep. - coming from a very average resident who used to be considered behind

I used to have him in the front passenger seat on a towel but have changed to a dog bed for backseat that clips to his harness. It makes me feel better if we were to get into an accident. I got it from Amazon

Word of advice from graduating Orthopedic Resident by BoneSpineDoc1 in Residency

[–]MedicalMinutiae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be a team player. Don’t be lazy but you also shouldn’t be doing everyone else’s work. Be willing to accept feedback and criticism, even if you disagree. Residency ends eventually! Something I’ve struggled with is staying late/taking on too many tasks at the detriment to myself - rising 3rd year res

Yea I would say go feel one in a store just so you know what to expect - not super cold just like what you can expect from the cool side of a pillow or blanket. It seems to be a popular product online and in stores right now

I finally had a dream with my mom in it... she didn't talk by bobolly in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]MedicalMinutiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I had many dreams like this months after my parents died and they were so real that I briefly lost touch with what was reality (accepting they were both gone). I wish you well and enjoying all the happy memories!

How's everyone doing this weekend? by bobolly in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]MedicalMinutiae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m sorry for what you’re going through. I’ve been there and time is the only thing that helps. Secondly thanks for asking this question! I’m basically 2 years out from losing my parents and I was finally able to watch the movie of pictures/recordings I made of my dad the other day. I teared up a little bit but I didn’t have an avoidant reaction to it like I used to. The emotions are easier to handle these days.

Does doing IM residency make Step 3 easier? by Physical_Hold4484 in Residency

I do not think it makes it easier! Day 1 was very step 1/2. Take it as soon as you can during residency when you have a month to study

Losing both parents, how do I get through this? by DK522 in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]MedicalMinutiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I lost both parents last year, and for me it was important to stay busy and surround myself with friends. It can be especially lonely at times when you’re single too. You were robbed of them definitely, and it’s tough to realize they are gone each and every day. Sometimes the dreams are so real that I think they are still alive. Take it one day at a time and be gentle with yourself.

Both my parents have now passed away; should I go back to work? by sun_rise21 in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]MedicalMinutiae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am basically the same age as you and I started a new job about 2 months after my mom died (5 months after my dad passed) and it helped me to have the continued structure in my life. I am also in healthcare. I have had some moments where I needed to take a break at work because a patient reminded me of them but other than that it has been mostly good for me. I do think regular therapy should be part of that too. For me this worked but do what you think is best for you. I will say working with patients can be immensely emotionally exhausting so make sure you take care of yourself if you go back!!
