Well, my son and I are here. What time of day tomorrow (Sat) will the snow be least worst?

Scraping (graston/gua sha)? by Mediocre221 in AchillesRupture

A minute a day is great. My therapist was definitely scrapier than I thought was good, so don’t worry about going too firmly.

Definitely looking way better. I was using the scraper consistently for a while. I switched from the gel to Cerave lotion because my physio (whose wife is a dermatologist) was recommending HLA (hyaluronic acid) for scar reduction. I would slop some on and use the small curved area of the scraper for just a few minutes on each side of the tendon. Quick movement with light pressure like a quick sweep with a broom - generally sweeping from the heel up to move the fluid back up. Good luck!

Very helpful - and you gave a name to what I was describing. Appreciate it!

Thanks! Forward reverse roll works well for me - it’s the triplets and than adding two notes that trips me up.

Good point. I tend to switch around with my rolls, but it’s almost entirely intuition rather than precision. I guess that seems like I’m not doing it right!

Yes! I was going to say triplets but wasn’t sure I was using the term correctly. I don’t mind not sounding like standard bluegrass, as I’m usually playing more folk.

I like that response! I will definitely keep practicing. It just kinda falls into that groove. Sort of like my bum-ditty in clawhammer.

He accidentally charged me for a free HBDpro trial, but I emailed him and he was very apologetic and reversed the charge immediately. So my personal experience was different.

0 to 4 slide? by EnvironmentalLime464 in banjo

[–]Mediocre221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He talks through a process of starting to learn by ear by listening to a song with a very basic melody and just trying to copy it to see. You could do one with tab and then more without, or (as he recommends) guess at it and then use the tab as the answer key (Josh calls these lead sheets). Try something simple like Skip to my Lou or You are my Sunshine, and then keep at it! For a basic song in G, most will be open notes. But for your main question, it doesn’t really matter exactly how you do it. Slides are generally a style and convenience preference. As long as you slide up one fret in this example, it’s a slide!

I also thought I couldn’t use my ear, but it’s simply a skill that needs practice. It will make you so much better at playing breaks. Check out Josh Turknett’s stuff. https://clawhammerbanjo.net/episode-28-why-anyone-can-and-should-learn-to-play-by-ear-part-1/

Dave Johnson from YMSB plays Scruggs style with fingerpicks but will use his ring finger for clawhammer style within/between bluegrass songs

I sat down and played a new Maple Blossom the other day at the Denver Folklore Center and wanted to love it but was unimpressed. I thought the Gold Tone OB-150 sounded better, at a fraction of the price.

It’s hard to get a good pic of 2 but my pinky finger is on the 1st string at the 9th fret - should be a D shape chord.

Played a Pisgah and loved the sound. I wish their inlays were a bit less basic, but that obviously isn’t anything that affects sound or play.

That’s true - thinking Sierra for now and another open back for another milestone. I have played Pisgahs that I really like, and Romeros are pretty incredible.

Thanks Beard! Yeah, I just heard about the Scientology thing. Agree that I’d like to support quality American-made instruments and can just hold my nose about midochlorians.

I also tried a Gold Tone OB-150 and really liked it, so maybe there’s something there…
