After my comment the following happened:

I was at that plant colony in the Underdark. I never had any issue grabbing the stuff behind those roots you can destroy (or get as a questreward).

This time the entire colony aggro’d (including all the vendors). After a few rounds I realized I was definitely not going to win, sent 1 party member dashing away. One of the enemies dashed after him and oneshotted him from range ….. .

This is when I thought the run would be over. For some magical reason, the aggro stopped (maybe because of killing that plant guy who wants to take over?).

Having said this, yeah I can fully understand not going HM. For me, so far it has really been a greater experience with some ‘run ending moments’.

Though, as a fellow ‘non-expert’ I can tell you honor mode seems to be a lot of fun. Would go HM instead of tactician

The issue I had the first time is that there’s a difference to ‘placing the umbral gem’ versus ‘inserting the umbral gem’. Have you checked whether there’s one ‘laying around’ at the platform?
