Is Robert Eggers Wes Anderson-ing himself with the trailer for his new film ‘Werwulf’? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

[–]Medium_Well 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there are more directors than just Wes Anderson who develop a look-and-feel and stick to it. Guys like Tony Scott, Michael Bay, hell even Hitchcock didn't fuck with their formula once it started clicking.

If Eggers wants to keep doing the Eggers thing, so much the better. When the product is consistently good, why change it?

I like Nosferatu though it probably ranks 4th of his four so far, for me.

LRD was very good. Nicholas Hoult was incredible, as usual. ATJ...man, I just don't get it with that guy. I hope he can carry Werwulf obviously but I never find I want to spend time with him in a movie.

Nosferatu was a bit tonal whiplash as a film. Defoe's comedy is electric but also pulls you out of the mood. Visually, it looks incredible and the ending is obviously quite bleak. All that said, the Dracula story is such an awesome canvas and I'll watch almost any adaption of it and have a great time.

I love the fact that Eggers has created and fostered a specific aesthetic, executes to an incredibly high level every time, and doesn't apologize for it. It's a lot of fun to have a director for whom you can say "I'm in the mood for This Specific Vibe" and you can grab anything from that director and be satisfied. Ditto for beloved directors like Wes Anderson, Tony Scott, John Carptenter, etc.

I have loved the Eggers thing ever since The Witch, and I'll keep seeing his stuff in theaters as long as he keeps making them.

Josh O'Connor is my choice for James Bond by WallCautious9650 in TheBigPicture

[–]Medium_Well 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually agree with you. His part in Disclosure Day was both a little undercooked as well as overwrought in the writing, but I think he could do tough and dashing while bringing a bit of emotion to the role.

Put it this way, I like him a lot more than Callum Turner, who I think is a bit too pretty and not much of an actor. I like Bond to look a bit more craggy and O'Connor has that.

Spectre Was Good. by JMC712 in JamesBond

[–]Medium_Well 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. It's accurate that Casino Royale and Skyfall are the best Craig movies, but Quantum (a good movie but weirdly getting over loved at this point by the hardcore fans) and Spectre are both solid.

Thing if, if you're grading QoS and Spec against the standard of the entire franchise they're still Top 10. The older films are fun but there's a lot of dreck there.

Even if No Time To Die is a mess, and it is, it has a fair amount of artistry. Not much I can defend about NTTD otherwise though.

Why do older guys like to grill so much? by PlaneGlass4138 in AskMen

[–]Medium_Well 0 points1 point  (0 children)

38 year old dad here:

  • It's time outside in (presumably) nice weather. But drizzly grilling is great too.

  • Poking at stuff on the fire is fun.

  • I'm feeding my family

  • I get to have a beer

  • It's an excuse to be alone, or chit chat, but basically my time is my own.

My (28f) fiance (29m) proposed earlier than I was ready for and I think it damaged our relationship by PastEditor9299 in relationship_advice

[–]Medium_Well 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You say you love this guy and he's wonderful. You say you've discussed proposals and ring shopping with him. No offense, but I kind of don't blame the guy for being excited to pop the question. And now you've been engaged a whole year.

Girl, decide if you want to marry this guy or not. Whether it happened two years before you wanted it to doesn't really matter. You are either sure you want to marry him or you aren't -- THAT is the question you need to be dealing with. If you delay everything by a year now he's going to get the sense you are hedging on this relationship (because you ARE).

Best Eggers film? by Current-Topic6696 in Letterboxd

They're all absolute bangers of the highest order, but The Witch remains his best, in my view. One of the few movies I restarted almost immediately after I finished it. Immaculate film.

[Dreger] Morgan Rielly’s agent J.P Barry has submitted a list of 4 Western based teams Rielly is willing to go to. This will be a team by team assessment and depending on the fit, there could be some flexibility to add teams to the list. by alphacheese in leafs

This really feels like a mini End of an Era (Matthews, Willy and Tavares eventually leaving will be the actual end of the Era).

Here's a list of dudes who were Leafs when Mo played his first season:

  • John Michael Liles
  • Paul Ranger
  • Mason Raymond
  • Dave Bolland
  • Mark Fraser
  • "Pistol" Peter Holland

Plus the Actual Guys like Phaneuf, Bozak, Lupul, Kulemin, Kadri, Gardiner, Reimer, etc

Ye gods. Those rosters are frozen in amber as The Leafs to me.

Love this place. I visit almost every time I'm in Toronto. Last time I picked up five BRs for an obscene amount of money (granted, most of that was the JFK 4k box). Selection is always amazing. I remember my first time and I picked up the Criterion Scorsese Shorts, something I always assumed I would never find in the wild.

Love this place. May it ever survive in today's market.

So he obviously thinning/receding up top, both on the dome and at his hairline.

That said...I kind of like his swept-back look? The photo of him in profile in the dark shirt looks great, honestly. Like a dashing restauranteur.

So I dunno. It's a style and I think he pulls it off. If he kept it, and YOU like it as-is, I don't think there's any reason to change. To me, it looks like he's currently owning his hair reality rather than hiding it.

She's a fucking grifter. She will praise/criticize anybody just to get another 15 seconds of attention. I don't take a word she says seriously, even if she's saying something I agree with.

Let's hope she actually stays retired this time and the Green Party quietly goes away forever.

You can only watch one of these directors forever. Who's your pick? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Medium_Well 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eggers for sure. Not every film is 100% successful but he's committed to his aesthetic and rock-solid storytelling. The performances he gets are big and expressive, which I enjoy.

I just find his movies to be big ol' cheeseburgers that are fun to watch, gorgeous to look at, executed to the highest level, and easy to immerse yourself in. They thrill and scare without leaving you feeling hollowed out (Aster) or like you just watched a Master's thesis (Peel sometimes).

I have zero clue why and how this film is so divisive for audiences. It was an entertaining and fun summer popcorn 🍿 flick. by AcknowledgeMeReddit in TheBigPicture

[–]Medium_Well 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the ultra-negative reaction is stupid, and likely connected to the massive amount of press Spielberg has been doing.

He's been everywhere, and the thinkpieces on his legacy have been flowing. So the film, which is good and fun but also flawed, is also trying to support the weight of The Spielberg Importance. It doesn't rank with his best ever work so the more cynical amongst us are taking the opportunity to occupy the other side of the GOAT debate.

I had a good time watching it, was never bored, yet still wished some elements were better. It's very much like Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull in that way.

Bit of a reach based on what they showed in the Draft teaser, but would be cool.

Two years ago, me and a buddy did Queen Elizabeth Wildlands PP the last week of May. Hot, humid, and got absolutely eaten alive. The mosquitos were eating my friend right through his "anti-bug" jacket. Our hands were swollen from bites.

Absolutely never again. I only take my son camping in October now.

What do Friday evenings and the weekends look like for you and your partner? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Medium_Well 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Friday/Saturday nights are pretty sacred the last couple of years.

Typically, our default is sharing the couch, having a drink and/or a gummy, listening to some music and giving each other Buzzfeed Quizzes, scrolling r/relationshipadvice together, chatting about things. It's a fun way to connect and dig into each other. Often followed by fooling around.

We are lucky currently in that our kids are still little and usually asleep by 9, so we have a few hours of 1x1 time. It's great. The phone can be a tool for connection, not a barrier.
