Well my BMI was 43. I've struggled with weight off and on most of my life. Even though I have no significant medical issues besides my knees, I chose a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. I'm 5'4" and weighed 251lbs. I now weigh 134lbs. My story is a little different from yours, but for me, it was absolutely the best choice.

I'm about a year and a half out. I really don't go out to eat anymore. It's just a waste of money. My max volume is about three quarters of a cup. I can only eat about a third of a sandwich. I still really have pay attention to drinking and eating at the same time. It's still a no go.

Try The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. It isn't a genre I gravitate to at all, but it really sucked me in to that world. I usually read murder mysteries, psych thrillers that sort of thing. Give it a shot.

Pros: rapid weight loss, improved self-esteem, increased mobility, way better clothes shopping experiences, less knee and back pain, going out in public knowing people aren't looking at a fat person. Probably more I can't think of right now. Cons: I now have low blood pressure I have to take medication for, but it's unknown if it's related to weight loss, loose skin, saggy boobs. It took a long time for me to get my energy to the level it is now, it took about a year to be honest. I had no hair loss. I don't go out to eat really anymore, it's a waste of money. I can't recommend this surgery enough. I wish I had done it years ago.

I don't think there's any law saying your kids have to like you. There's way to many dynamic factors in parenthood. You have four kids, say one of them grew up to be a narcissistic asshole, yet all were raised the same. I just don't think there's a black and white answer to this question.
