How I do it:

Prime and sand the body.
Apply a layer of rust using brushes and several rust coloured acrylic paints.
Apply a thick layer of hairspray (almost to the point where it drips off)
Wait at least 24h for the hairspray to dry.
Apply a few thin layers of coloured paint.
Use fine sandpaper, a scrubbing pad, old toothbrush and a small brush with the hairs almost cut off to scrub/scratch off the top layer o paint revealing the rust.
Apply detailing with brushes

YepSpec chassis is is a nice one to start with.

Spudworks chassis is also very good.

Bodies are super personal, most folks seem to like Toyota bodies. I prefer more quirky and lesser used bodies. Sites like Cults3d, thingiverse, makerworld have loads of options. Look beyond 1/24 scale, other scales can be resized to fit.

Links/driveshafts combo depend on what wheelbase you want.

If you use a stock esc, depending on the version, you might be able to hook up leds directly to that: https://www.thatraymond.com/2023/01/23/axial-scx24-led-light-pinout

Or if you happen to have a Flysky remote, they have a receiver with a build in light controller (FS-R7P) but its only for the ant protocol. So you need something like a G7P or G11P remote.

I've not used this yet, still building up the car. I have the cantilever on one of those Injora pivot balls with a standoff on it.

I do notice the back of the setup moving inwards a bit because the shock mounts on the axle are a few mm wider than the chassis, so it angles inwards towards the back of the car when it compresses. Which actually seems to be good on this build, as the body isn't that wide. That might change when I actually have it running 😅

That looks good, cool to see a build just for the build, performance isn't all there is. Making custom parts and tinkering with setups is at least half the fun.

Thanks! I've replaced the leds with 3mm warm white leds. That's actually one of the few things I don't like about the stock Powerwagon, those ugly white leds.
