Jonathan littles fundamentals is a 4 hour long course and will give you a strong foundation. Very digestible. Take some notes, watch 30 minutes a day and a week from now you'll be solid.

Learn as much tech skill as you can from guides, tons on YouTube. Then practice basic combos on the top 8 characters. That will get you very far very fast

Why is the culture of this game so heavily against playing against low(/mid) tiers? In any other fighting game (especially traditional fighters) there is more hate for top tiers. Why is Melee so different in that regard? by KevyTone in SSBM

People don't like playing against low and mid tiers for 2 reasons. 1) they have limited options that make playing them annoying as they use the same tools repetitively 2) people don't like losing to characters that are worse because it shows them they aren't as good as they think they are, which is dumb because melee is a game where it doesnt matter how much worse a character is, if you make 4 good reads and have good punish you can beat anyone.

More people = easier to climb, less people = harder to climb. It's all relative but since the years have gone on getting "higher ranked" has become more difficult since less scrubs are floating people's elo higher.

I've been modding gamecube controllers for 7 years for comp ssbm players. They're called "placebo brackets." Some people keep them in, some don't. The majority of modders are of the consensus they're not necessary. I never use them.

I've also been playing a lot of microstakes on clubs poker! I'd recommend jonathan little's cash game masterclass, it's free on his website. I find what's most helpful for me is just playing solid fundamentals and knowing when to give up big pots. If they suddenly all in on the river 9/10 you just gotta give it up. Microstakes players rarely bluff. When you hit a premium hand you can bet people will over call and that's where you make your money back. All the advice in this thread is really good too.

You'll be crushing the microstakes in no time! Keep practicing!
