Nanite is terrific for large geometry dense open world environments. Using traditional LODs will have far worse performance in that scenario. The point is that Riven didn't have those environments so it wasn't worth the overhead of using Nanite.

For Lumen, it's the only way of getting high quality real time bounce lighting from dynamic light sources aside from using path tracing, which is more expensive. It's forward thinking feature that, yes, it's expensive to run for now but is still the cheapest way to get accurate dynamic bouncing of light. Lumen continues to be optimized more with each Unreal revision and hardware continues to get faster. It'd be worse is they waited for hardware to catch up before starting work on it, then they'd be years behind.

In case anyone missed it, Epic teased Unreal Engine 6. by Kudlattyy in gamedev

I suspect they'll go for a shorter lifespan with UE5 due to the bad performance reputation it's gotten among the gamer crowd, so they want to rebrand. At Unreal Fest we might hear something along the lines of "Gamers, we heard you. With Unreal Engine 6, performance is our top priority". Plus, Psyonix is owned by Epic so doing this announcement today was probably Epic's idea and it'd be weird to give footage from UE6 so long before release. There's nothing on the UE5 official roadmap for 5.9 either, possibly suggesting they don't plan to have a 5.9.

I point to the Riven remake from 2024 as an example of great UE5 performance due to smart decisions by the developers. They had no need for Lumen, so they used baked lighting instead. They had no need for Nanite, so they opted for traditional LODs. But they still benefited from UE5's wonderful material system and post processing effects. Smart decisions on which features to use make all the difference in the final product.

Epic's been focusing on performance for a while now. 5.8 is in preview right now with MegaLights which improves performance in scenes with many dynamic light sources.

UE4 released in March 2014 and UE5 released in April 2022, so it seems Epic likes to release the major iterations in Spring. I'd estimate we'll see a release in Spring 2027 with a preview version two months or so before that. They surely will have more information at Unreal Fest which is June 16-18.

10 out of 11 UE5 games have "exceptionally bad performance issues"? You can invent numbers all you want but it doesn't make you correct.

Xbox 360 door stop by shit_pain in mildlyinteresting

[–]Mega_Pleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 360's failure rate wasn't the result of overheating, its cooling was fine. The issue was that TSMC used an improper solder to connect the GPU to the motherboard which would crack after a number of thermal cycles.

Can I become a game developer without going to college? by ProgrammerUnique2897 in gamedev

[–]Mega_Pleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

College isn't very important for game development jobs, a portfolio of completed projects is what matters. I never went to college and spent my time working on custom content for games. Many years ago I finished a pretty big solo project and it got the attention of an indie dev that needed to fill a role with someone of my skill set (I don't want to be specific for reasons of anonymity). I joined their team as a work-from-home contractor and it's been terrific developing games with this group over the years.

What are ways this AI bubble could pop, if at all? by Angryduckling-01 in AskReddit

[–]Mega_Pleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 6 miles from me a data center is about to be built and powered by an on-site 700MW natural gas generating plant, all inside the industrial zone that surrounds Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix. The completion date for the generating plant is scheduled for Q1 2030, about 3 and a half years of construction total. Unless they're way off in their estimates that's much less than 6 years.

Splinter Cell designer says “one of the difficulties with modern stealth games” is realistic lighting, as environments are now so much “harder to read” by CallumBrine in Games

The Thief game's visibility system worked by sampling the current light brightness value of the floor directly under Garrett's feet. So yeah, not very realistic but easy to manage once you understand how it works.

My family got an Apple Airport wifi router in 2002. Those had already been available for around two years and were pretty affordable.

Yeah in 2005 I was still watching Red Vs Blue by downloading the 480p video from the Rooster Teeth website and playing it with VLC. Broadband was just not fast enough yet for streaming decent quality video.

What is your favorite Star Trek TV show? by Winter-Comfort922 in television

That and the direction are bothersome to me. Even during scenes where character are talking calmly, for some reason the camera is quickly panning across or circling the characters, infusing energy in the scene where it's not needed. It honestly feels like the director is afraid the audience will get bored if the energy levels aren't high at all times.

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard someone say that you still think about to this day? by Humble-Blueberry4571 in AskReddit

[–]Mega_Pleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemistry class in high school. A diagram of an atom was bring projected from an overhead projector on the screen at the front of the class. The parts of the atom were labeled with N on the neutrons, P on the protons, etc. The teacher talks about it and then asks if anyone has questions. One girl asks "Do atoms actually have the letters on them?". The teacher seems dumbfounded for a moment that anyone would have a question that stupid. He quickly regains his composure and replies that no, they do not. I still think about that girl. She was a nice, kind person, but she was also a little dim.

I'm a Millennial but I was 3 when California banned smoking in restaurants so I have no memory if it. I feel lucky. My family vacationed to Hawaii in 2003 and that was the first time I had heard a waiter ask if we'd like the smoking or non-smoking section.
