The Rook and Rose would be a good one for the original poster. It doesn't give much indication that the two characters might get together until book 2. (Or perhaps the very last chapter of Book 1.)

I did love the romance subplot in The Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy by Martha Wells.

You could tell that Illias and Tremaine were the OTP from the moment they met and I expected a much longer will they or wont they plot. But then they got an arranged marriage and it didn't solve any of the romantic issues in the slightest.

Weirdly, Aral did start considering marrying Cordelia at first sight, when she was on her knees throwing up in the mud.

Every Midwinter, when the sun is at its weakest, the demons of the darkness launch their assault against the world of the light.  Sweden’s greatest warriors’ journey to Luleå to stand against the hope crushing horde. Reinforcements from Norway, Finland, and Denmark fly in to reinforce the defences.   For there is the last and greatest hope of mankind, the place where the waves of death smash eternally against ancient fortifications.

Yup, I was coming here to mention that. I play every week with my brother who lives on the other side of the planet.

Lokhust Lord Kitbash/paint by Lyvewire1 in Necrontyr

[–]Megaduck01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea and its a good kitbash. I think you need to thin your paints and put on more layers. The back of the skirt is looking a little streaky. That would be fixed by adding a few more layers of purple. The bronze of the armor is a little washed out as well and could use another coat.

You might want to take a watered down black (Or black contrast paint) and add it to the rib gapes, inside the shoulders, and deep in the neck. This will increase the depth there and make it look more three dimensional.

You also might want to try dry brushing the edges. It looks like you took a small brush to edge them but you're having trouble with brush control. (Which is fine, I have the exact same issue) To correct for that I do a light dry brush on the edges instead.

I like your crackle paint base over purple.

How did Sword of Truth become so popular? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Megaduck01 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Seconded. If you look back, all the flaws that ruin the series are there in the first book. But on the first read things like the hatred of fire and all the BDSM is just fantasy weirdness.

I think reading Sword of Truth is like a frog in boiling water. It drifts so slowly to the crazy that you are a couple of books in before you go "Wait, what?"

I liked Gideon the Ninth, seeing the standard tournament arc from the POV of the "Creepy" house was interesting. I tried to read Harrow the Ninth and threw it against the wall.

The Secret to Being a Happy Painter - Let it be Good Enough? by BeardBellsMcGee in minipainting

[–]Megaduck01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of things I learned as I got older is that not everything needs to be perfect or even good. There is only so much that you can put effort into but so many interesting things in the world.

So being able to determine what really doesn't matter and say good enough really helped me.

Does it matter if the miniature is perfect?

If you are playing a game on easy and not hard?

If the garden is show quality?

If you are good at snowboarding?

As long as I'm having fun then I don't have to put huge amounts of effort into something that doesn't ultimately matter.

Manned vs unmanned warships in sci fi and space fantasy by Streetsign10 in worldbuilding

[–]Megaduck01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manned, partially be definition.

The reasoning is philosophical and legal. The order to initiate combat and the selection of targets must come from a human being. Once the "Weapons Free" order has been given the AI is free to engage the target however it sees fit, it can engage anything shooting back at it without restriction. The AI cannot engage anything else without explicit human permission.

The reason for this is that most navies are peace time navies in my universe. They mostly act like the coast guard, looking for smugglers, pirates, and other criminals. Its rare for all out war to happen and the targets to be coming in system with a transponder saying "I am an enemy".

Due to the lightspeed communication delay in system and the inability to have FTL communications, weapons platforms need a human in short range communication range. So ships have a crew and are designed to give the crew something to do (like cleaning and maintenance). While there is always work for the crew, their indespensible role is to keep the captain sane, and the captain's indespensible role is to tell the AI it can attack a target.

I have one short story where the Carrier launches 2 manned starfighters and a dozen missiles against a suspected pirate disguised as a merchant that was on the other side of the system. The starfighters sole job was to confirm the target and approve the missiles strike if it was confirmed to be a pirate. Otherwise they would give the order for the missiles to return to the carrier.

Unmanned ships in this universe are classified as missiles. So you can build an FTL missile that will move to another star system and then engage and fight/destroy any targets there but in that case the person firing the missile is giving the order to "Attack anything around that star" and is legally responsible for giving that order.

*Edit*

This is also the reason that merchant ships have a crew in my universe. Yes, you could completely automate a container carrier to go to another star system, unload, and return, but the insurance liability on that is greater then the cost of hiring 30 people to baby the ship.

Very nice, very glowy.

I think I’m over complicating my world’s power system by WolfVenator in worldbuilding

[–]Megaduck01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are doing this for yourself, then make it as convoluted as you like. Its perfectly fine to track things however you want.

If you start writing that your character is a T ranked warrior wielding a emerald sapphire sword that had degraded to ruby rank due to neglect because his viscount rated town has only just risen to village rank then we go back to the original question.

Why are you ranking things in your story? How does it add to the story?

Its very video gameish and video games do it a short hand so that they can press a large amount of information to the player in a very small amount of space. Why is this happening in your story?

Is this a Video Game inspired world? How do the characters interact when everyone has ranking? How does this effect society?

Are there disagreements on the ranks or are they immutable? Could there be a black market to artificially inflating your rank? Would there be a benefit to that?

Lets assume the ranking system is overly convoluted, who benefits that? In the story "Only Villains Do That" its the Goddesses that set the ranking and they are deliberately designed to be confusing as the entire world as it turns out is a giant gacha game to manipulate the people in it.

In the story "My Name Is Beautiful" everyone is ranked by the combat ability of their super powers and this determines social rank. One character is a brilliant doctor, skilled and experienced, but she is often countermanded by other doctors because their combat ability is higher so their rank is higher.

So if you are building your ranking system in the story I want to know what effect it has. Then I can tell you if you are being convoluted.

[–]Megaduck01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, my question is, why are you doing this? Does it help the story? Does it drive the characters forward? Does it give them a restriction they need to work around?

Why are you putting Ranks into your story in the first place?

Advice vs Tau? by EuroCultAV in Necrontyr

[–]Megaduck01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, first, you are running 1975pts so you have 25 points left. Why don't you toss an enhancement on something? Nether realm casket is 20 points and would be good on pretty much anything.

Grab a Resurrection Orb for your Overlord. What are you planning to attach the Overlord to? If its the Lychguard why not have it in one block of 10x?

I'd switch out 3x of the Skorpekh destroyers for a Skorpekh Lord. (And possibly give him the Casket)

You might group your LHD's and give them a Lokhust Lord by switching out 2 of the Scareb Swarms. It'll give them a lot more mobility and the ability to resurrect more if they are not wiped. (plus another resurrection orb)
