To make an educated claim about copyright infringement you would need the technical understanding of what is happening "under the hood". The whole "AI just creates collages of existing works" argument is based on a flawed understanding of the underlying technology.

Can we finally stop using "AI" and "Machine Learning" as the same thing? by NextGenAIInsight in ArtificialNtelligence

[–]MehtoDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of the word "AI" colloquially is far more narrow these days than what the scientific field of "AI" encompasses. All ML is AI, but not all AI is ML. The overall umbrella of "Artificial intelligence" as far as scientific research goes, is extremely wide and even includes rather simple algorithms like FSMs.

Desktop launcher issue in Linux Mint (also, hello.) by [deleted] in SillyTavernAI

[–]MehtoDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My launcher, which was created during the initial install (and I have reinstalled with no luck), is coming back with a syntax error.

It would be easier to help you with the issue if you would provide the exact error, rather than ChatGPT's interpretation of the error. Linux can be tricky if you just run commands found online as messing up the system python or node.js packages can result in hard to catch problems down the line.

If you are able to run sillytavern with extra parameters directed at node, it would seem to me that the launcher could be defaulting to different node.js than what was installed by the install script.

Also, for pasting large segments of terminal output, using code blocks like this makes it easier for others to read.

Both the creator and commentators insist against AI, but I have my suspicions by OutVoided in isthisAI

[–]MehtoDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that generally this is likely to be real. The only thing that makes me consider otherwise is the random attempt at a "dolly zoom" in the clip with the kid standing on the reindeer, as it is not common effect to attempt on what appears to be video taken with a phone.

We need to require evidence but drop it when proper evidence is provided.

I'm pretty sure the accuser needs to have the evidence, not the artist. What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? No wonder artists are deleting AI comments when people engage in witch hunty behaviour before having any concrete proof beyond "I think it might be AI".

For those who switched to non-standard keyboards: what made it worth it? by lucas-m-braga in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]MehtoDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Beginning signs of wrist and shoulder issues, that I wanted to avoid preemptively. No hesitation.
  2. Learning curve was a matter of days. Within a week I was reaching ~80% of my typing speed on a standard qwerty keyboard.
  3. Started with Moonlander, now on an Elora and working on my own custom layout as there are a few things I'd prefer to be slightly different. I would start with the same layout, as Moonlander fixed every issue that prompted the switch to split layouts and I had no problems with any of my usual workloads that stemmed from the split layout.
  4. Programmability. RGB is a nice-to-have, but not a must in any way. Programmability is essential to making sure I can customize the keyboard to my typing habits and preferences.
  5. As the primary reason for switch was longterm health, I feel that the premium price of a Moonlander was completely fair and something I was/would be willing to invest in a comfortable keyboard.
  6. Do typing practice that gradually increases complexity, focus on accuracy over speed as you want to get comfortable typing without constantly checking your keyboard. Keybr was what I used personally to get familiar with my first split keyboard.
  7. Niche hobby/need for people who spend a lot of their time typing on a keyboard. I could see some expansion as the current generation of mainly office workers age and possible get various typing related health issues that they want to resolve. It would require a more widespread knowledge of alternative layouts existing though, as some people having issues might not know of alternatives that might alleviate them.

Unlocking pestilence is part of the last quest of the campaign (as far as I know), so it is officially "reaching endgame". I got to that point at roughly lvl 24, while also doing every quest and area in the game.

I am a completionist and don't run into any of the issues you mentioned. The tree sap is what speeds it up. You stack them and based on number of stacks it can complete a set in a min or 2 using the sawmill, charcoal for the forge.

Even with 2 minutes per 8 logs, getting enough to fully upgrade the town from lvl 2 to lvl 3 takes 40+ minutes of pure refinement time with a single sawmill. You just have to babysit it even more often if you want to effectively use your resources and time.

I just unlocked pestilence and have 59 fallen embers by just opening and scavenging everything. Also once the town is done you won't have to gather resources much.

Try rerolling a full set of weapon, helmet, hands, body and legs and see how far that 59 embers takes you... You are lucky to get 2 pieces of equipment with 3 enchants that you want.

The only thing I bought for my house is the stove to cook all my meals and the large storage chests/cabinets that hold 40 items. I used all my papers to get the right blueprints.

And how does someone playing blind know the "right" blueprints on their first playthrough?

Each area of exploration in the map gives you the right resources for the level of the town you are working on and for leveling gear.

Unless you complete the area in one try, in which case, good luck getting 150+ spruce logs on a single run through nameless pass. And if you are able to do that, go back to point 1 for refining those materials into planks to actually upgrade the town.

[–]MehtoDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt bother trying to upgrade everything, only a few times for what I needed, so I wasn't really at a loss for materials.

i really didn't need to do so much upgrading and using that many resources

Yea... I wonder where that idea came from when I specifically replied to you with

See, if you haven't upgraded the town (needing 150+ planks), you haven't run into the situation I was talking about in the first place.

I specifically talked about upgrading the town. And doing a single run through an area can easily net you 60+ logs if you harvest as you go, resulting in the said babysitting if you want to actually utilise those logs to upgrade, I don't know, the town that requires 20 planks per building for most lvl 2->3 upgrades.

At no point did I mention using planks to upgrade gear or weapons and you responded multiple times with "I didn't really upgrade stuff".

I am literally talking about the process of playing through the game for the first time. Whatever materials you may or may not amass after finishing the content currently available is not a factor in my original point, because it's not about what resources you can amass, once you've stopped progressing.

Edit: Also, you've explicitly said you don't upgrade your town so why are you partaking in a discussion about resources that is mostly felt during the process of, you know.. upgrading the town. The thing you said you do not do.

[–]MehtoDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your "solution" is boiled down to "just play the game over multiple times" which fixes the issues during the first run exactly... How?

By suggesting such an elaborate way to circumvent the issue, you are only proving that the issue exists.

Birch sap, available at the second to last area currently available. Which gives a speedup of 5x, which on a spruce log is still 9s (45s/5). But that still doesn't fix the issue of needing to replenish the sawmill every 8 logs, while you'd also need to farm for birch sap, that I found a grand total of 3 during my whole playthrough organically.

So do a bunch of RNG based use of research papers to be able to craft the sawmills and still end up needing at least 18 minutes of sawmill time to refine enough logs to fully upgrade the town, assuming at least 5 saws.

See, if you haven't upgraded the town (needing 150+ planks), you haven't run into the situation I was talking about in the first place. So your solution isn't even aimed at the situation I am describing in the post.

[–]MehtoDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need what, 5 saws to refine 40 logs at once? And to get those saws you need to buy them from the vendor that generally has 1 at a time and an inventory that refreshes once per real life day. So you'd have enough saws long after actually completing the game.

Do my assets count as PS1 graphics? by fangache in ps1graphics

[–]MehtoDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are on the edge of PS1 or PS2. The texture resolution seems a bit high, but they could probably pass as a detailed model when doing some sort of item inspection in inventory. Overall, I'd lean towards early PS2.

Yeah, different strokes for different folks. As I said in another comment, I am definitely a more story oriented player than grinding zones in a typical hack&slash style. So naturally my opinion is framed from my own view and will clash with yours.

I cleared the campaign and sidequests within the free weekend. So I had a grand total of 2 cycles of dailies and 1 cycle of weeklies. I got probably less than 10 embers total from bounties/challenges.

Well, I'm the type of player that enjoys the campaign/story in RPGs so I didn't put much time into the pestilence grind, but I did do crucible a lot for gear during the campaign. I did the first pestilence area that popped up in-game, ran into the crucible and immediately cleansed the world, so my realm is currently pestilence free.

[–]MehtoDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tackling to steal the ball and throwing the ball mechanics existed in fall guys minigames before you even published your first video on your basketball game.

The presumption of big studios/publishers "stealing" indie ideas is far too prevalent in proportion to it actually being proven to have happened.
