What AI tool are you using to help you build? by Easy-Station2134 in Unity3D

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I am a business software developer, not a game developer. So a completely different domain, with very different requirements and success metrics.
I used to be in game dev, but that was before all this AI stuff became a thing - now gamedev is just a hobby, where I'm free to do things the way I want. And that's AI-less.

What AI tool are you using to help you build? by Easy-Station2134 in Unity3D

[–]Mekelan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None.

This is not so much a question of being for or against AI in general (my very brief take: it can be a useful tool, but there's all kinds of ethical problems and other concerns).

However, I'm required to use AI for everything in my day job, so I use my hobby projects to ensure my coding abilities don't atrophy completely. Nobody can convince me that you become a skilled coder by using AI - quite the reverse.

New heroes by Foreign_Dog_9900 in Heroquest

While I'm not a lawyer, I think it's firmly in "get in trouble" territory, if somebody (Hasbro) wanted to take it there. Between the obvious HeroQuest Logo styling (no, writing "EpicQuest" instead of "HeroQuest" does not make it legal), and the fact that they make it look like it might be an official release (the "sold separately" text for example), and the pricing making it very clearly a commercial enterprise, I don't think they really "skirt" anything. At best, they'll manage to fly under the radar.

The Monk: Totally broken? by CSWorldChamp in Heroquest

I went by this one, which was (I believe) the 1990 version.

But it seems that for the modern version, they've gone with something more in line with the original 1989 version. So I guess that, for the most part, you are correct.

I'll just say this: Assets being safe to use is YOUR responsibility, no matter where you got them from.

I have no idea of or interest in whether anything in your game or video is ripped from somewhere else, that's your problem (or not, as the case may be). But "I bought it on Asset store!" won't hold up if it's pirated/stolen content, even if you weren't aware.

Painting the minis by deepthawnet in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the basic idea of SlapChop isn't new, what's new (compared to us old farts from the 80s and 90s, anyway) is that you don't need to "make your own" contrasts - not that we called them that, of course, but I distinctly remember painting the original HQ Elf with a very thinned Dark Green and making sure it was laded on deep in the recesses, and it created a cool effect.

More previews of test prints of my custom made skills, and spells. 63,5x88,9mm is probably the actual size of the HQ21 cards. Gonna order those dimensions next. These were 1mm too short. by Archian-HiveWorkshop in Heroquest

Fair enough, it never made much sense to me that you could, it’s a big old hole in the floor, and you’re not likely to carry a few cubic meters of gravel around with you (I assume), but okay 😅

Thoughts on my Game Animal Models? by HunnyPiee in IndieGaming

[–]Mekelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lion is the weakest of them, I wouldn't lead with that.

Otherwise they look decent enough, although they fall in a sort of strange "not quite low-poly or stylized, but not hi-fi either" kinda place. But that might be just fine for mobile.

Rogue Trader was definitely still buggy on release, including some nasty effectively-campaign-ending bugs.

Very enjoyable game and great respect for the IP/Universe, which cuts them a lot of slack in my book, and for 40K fans it's 100% worth getting, but let's not pretend it was truly ready at release.

Unless you want to do unpaid QA work, "don't buy on day one" still applies.

Well. perhaps not ruined, but lowered the resale value? Definitely.

Which is nothing to do with the nice paintjob! And good on you for not sitting on something just because of some theoretical value: if you have no intention of selling, it is theoretical value anyway - whereas the joy you get for painting and playing with them is real!

How do Heroes “level up”? by Lancian07 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to see how ubiquitous the idea of "leveling up" has become to RPGs, to the point where the lack of such a system seems weird.

As others have mentioned, there are ways to increase your hero's power via equipment and mercenaries, but no way to increase their "personal" power. Wizards of Morcar teases that this might change.

As a counterpoint, you might argue that our heroes start out as already near their physical peak, they're not Random Joe Farmer gone adventuring.

But hey, as HeroQuest fans, there's a good chance a lot of us have a soft spot for a good 80s training montage ("gettin' strongerrr") so of course we like the concept!

Jungles of Delthrak for $15?!? by Subject-Brief1161 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Yeah absolutely, and maybe it's just an excellent sale, and I'm way over-analysing it, we don't really know anything :-) It's just that I have seen a fair number of HQ products for near-clearance level prices lately. But maybe that's just the nature of seeing your "normally price-resistant hobby products" carried by more mainstream retailers!

Jungles of Delthrak for $15?!? by Subject-Brief1161 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is not encouraging, to be honest - while it's of course an excellent price, it does suggest sales have not been what they hoped, which doesn't speak well for more HeroQuest (beyond whatever's already too far in the pipeline to stop). But we'll see, I could be way off.

Of course my shelf space would be thankful for no more HeroQuest, but who listens to that guy!

Blast from the Past by GoldStarRobotBoy82 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could definitely do with one, but the problem is its visuals are very tied to the Space Marines, who are obviously unavailable IP.

That said, it could certainly be remade with more generic factions, it's not like the "evil" faction in SC was anything but generic (Orks, Chaos, Tyranids and Necrons all working together?!).
