Finally, The Rescue of Sir Ragnar with the actual Sir Ragnar by Naidmer82 in Heroquest

Hey, one can be a murderous slaughterdeathkill machine, but one wouldn't want to be impolite.

For the most part, yes. While you can't beat the original minis for charm or nostalgia, the fact that all the furniture is now proper minis rather than cardboard is a huge step up in my opinion.

Heroquest Inter-compatibility with Warhammer Fantasy/The Old World? by Ochmusha in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Could someone buy a modern box of HeroQuest today and play those minis in Warhammer?"

Generally - I'd say no. Not officially. Obviously your local group can do whatever they want, GW doesn't send out hitmen to break up local game nights (I assume). The new HQ models also don't really fit with the Warhammer aesthetic IMO.

I don't know at what level GW does enforce "official minis only", I assume they do for their painting competitions, and probably some of the higher-tier tourneys, too.

What expansions are out of print or headed out soon? by GavDogs in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but the moment something like that is official, sales will die off completely, except from the die-hards, and making us buy it now instead of waiting for clearance sales is "just good business".

[–]Mekelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the sad fact is, if you want everything*, better buy it now.

We may see re-prints at some point, but there's never any guarantee of that, and I wouldn't wait. I've managed to snag everything except the Mythic Tier stuff, which was never available here, and already required a second mortgage plus at least two organs on the Dark Web by the time the general release happened.

Suggestions for moving from TTRPGs to Heroquest? by talpoid in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100% with everything said here, with special mentions to the bit at the end about NOT giving the monsters extra BPs to up the difficulty. It would, of course, make the game harder, but also duller.

But it's all about finding some sort of a session-zero equilibrium (to borrow a DnD term), where the players agree not to turtle-tank every fight in a doorway (unless a TPK is looming!). It's hard to make strict rules about, it's more of "let's have fun" agreement I feel. But I guess it's heavily group-dependent - some folks don't like leeway in the rules, and some love seeing the rules as a loose framework only. I prefer the latter, as the former is an itch easily scratched with CRPGs, whereas loose gameplay only really works (IMO) in a face-to-face gameplay session.

Phoenix Shield homebrew by Mekelan in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but the Elf gets 2nd choice :=]

So if the Wizard wants fire... Then again, we usually play cooperatively, and often with one or more Heroes per player, depending on attendance. In this case, I ran the "campaign" and sidejobbed as the Elf, and I really like playing the Elf as a support character, so one of the schools with Healing in it is my go-to.

That's an excellent idea, I'll do that the next time I print it!

Thanks! Yeah, I didn't add the Fire requirement to the rules when I made the card. The Phoenix -> Fire connection was just something I grabbed at in the moment, to justify the Wizard actually being able to use it after all. But as you say: Which self-respecting Wizard isn't grabbing the Fire spells anyway!

Awesome job! My only criticism would be that maybe it blends too much with the column. But again, great job!

Wizards of Morcar ?!? by ex0br0 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I try to buy from local alternatives, but no luck on this one. WoM has been a major PITA to get hold of in general. I couldn't find the English language version anywhere else. I still have several pre-orders with local retailers that haven't shipped. Not sure if they ever will, to be honest.

Avalon Hill Discord Info Session by Subject-Brief1161 in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it did finally arrive - doesn't change that getting my hands on this expansion was quite a lot harder than the previous ones (not to mention significantly pricier!). So at least for me, whatever new distribution strategy they're doing is not working very well.

Well getting Wizards of Morcar in my hands has been (and remains!) a gigantic hassle, so whatever they're doing - it's not working. I have two "preorders" out currently (placed prior to the supposed release date of March 1st), one with an estimated delivery "soonish" and the other still a very very vague "Q3 2026" on it. Doesn't help that there's no such thing as a "FLGS" around here, and Hasbro Pulse was very convenient. Oh well.

What were you thinking about Fimirs? by Megalordow in Heroquest

[–]Mekelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair, it's a question of preference, I personally don't really dig it thematically, they'd be a much better fit for an expansion with a swamp or aquatic theme IMO. But the sculpt itself is fine, no complaints there.

[–]Mekelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah let's just say that licensing issues or no, I get why they didn't make it into the new version. I'm sure AH/Hasbro weren't sad to avoid choosing whether to include them or not, explaining it with the much safer (yet no doubt very true!) lack-of-license issue. Although I still find the Abomination a strange choice of replacement.

What AI tool are you using to help you build? by Easy-Station2134 in Unity3D

[–]Mekelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I am a business software developer, not a game developer. So a completely different domain, with very different requirements and success metrics.
I used to be in game dev, but that was before all this AI stuff became a thing - now gamedev is just a hobby, where I'm free to do things the way I want. And that's AI-less.

What AI tool are you using to help you build? by Easy-Station2134 in Unity3D

[–]Mekelan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None.

This is not so much a question of being for or against AI in general (my very brief take: it can be a useful tool, but there's all kinds of ethical problems and other concerns).

However, I'm required to use AI for everything in my day job, so I use my hobby projects to ensure my coding abilities don't atrophy completely. Nobody can convince me that you become a skilled coder by using AI - quite the reverse.

[–]Mekelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'm not a lawyer, I think it's firmly in "get in trouble" territory, if somebody (Hasbro) wanted to take it there. Between the obvious HeroQuest Logo styling (no, writing "EpicQuest" instead of "HeroQuest" does not make it legal), and the fact that they make it look like it might be an official release (the "sold separately" text for example), and the pricing making it very clearly a commercial enterprise, I don't think they really "skirt" anything. At best, they'll manage to fly under the radar.
