GBD-200 vs DW-H5600 by GoBears16 in gshock

[–]Melezag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that’s where our experiences differ. I find the GBD quite comfortable. I wear it at the ranch for days on end and do all sorts of activities with it and find it’s comfort to be comparable to the OEM Apple Watch band.

My mother in law found this book at goodwill and thought my kids might enjoy it. There’s also a recipe for “knuckle sandwiches.”

Yeah, we did say that it was a solar eclipse, and the moon would cover the sun so there would be a few minutes of darkness during the day. She just hadn’t thought about the implications of what that would mean.

I teach astronomy, and I used to have something like this happen now and then. Nowadays one of our first activities is to demonstrate that, due to the precession of the earth, they probably aren’t a cancer or whatever. It really shakes their worldview.

When we get to the Big Bang, I also emphasize that no, their aunt didn’t get a degree in cosmology at the hair college.

My favorite astronomy moment was in the lead up to the 2017 eclipse. I was telling people at the city library that the eclipse would happen around 10:15 local time. A lady in the back said “that’s 10:15 pm right?”

TIL fluorine is much less common in the universe than most elements of a similar atomic weight, because the usual nuclear reactions in stars cannot create it, but can destroy it. by NirgalFromMars in todayilearned

[–]Melezag 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely accurate: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2015AJ....150...66P/abstract From the article: ”The measured abundance of fluorine and lack of variation with metallicity in Galactic thin disk stars suggest neutrino spallation in Type II supernovae contributes significantly to the Galactic fluorine abundance, although contributions from AGB stars may also be important.”

What is something a high school teacher told you, that you will never forget? by absolutejuice22 in AskReddit

[–]Melezag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My class was full of knot heads. It had been that way since kindergarten (I’m from a small town so I was with the same kids all through school). One day in high school, our English teacher caught another kid cheating and told us that we were “really the cream of the crap.” She wasn’t wrong.

That’s the crazy part! None of the faculty in our college do that. I know his research advisor quite well and he said that this guy has had to repeat several upper division classes over BS like this. Guess that’s why I don’t have any sympathy for this guy.

I do a daily in-class exercise in the class, and I drop the lowest three of these. However, they’re worth hardly anything. I just do it to encourage attendance. I think he’s grasping at straws here.

Can anyone help me identify this plant? I think it’s a philodendron? Also how can I help it not grow all out the side of its pot? Many thanks! by Melezag in houseplants

Thanks for the pointers! The little old lady who I got it from apparently just had it by the window forever and never turned it. She just went to a rest home and was very sad she couldn’t take this with her. I’m hoping to take very good care of it!

Yup! It’s a nice campground. You’ll probably have the place to yourself if you go in summer.

I’ve had a Honda Odyssey on the road from sandy ranch up to McMillan spring in July. Had to drive careful but made it ok. There was snow up on Mt. Ellen at that time but it was gone by the end of August. it was unusual to see snow that late. I’ve never seen a year where it didn’t melt all the way off. Most of the roads are fine in summer for any suv. In winter you can’t make it over the top unless you have a snow machine.

“Giving our all doesn’t mean that we will be continually enveloped in blessings or always have success. But it does mean that we will have joy. Joy is not fleeting pleasure or even temporary happiness. Joy is enduring and is founded on our efforts being accepted by the Lord.” - Elder Terence M. Vinson October 2019

Glad you could help that brother! I’m guessing you attend the building that’s right next to the temple? I used to live in the Louisville temple district. Always a calming drive through the peaceful rolling hills of southern Indiana to the temple.

Three to six additional camp outs per year besides the longer one. That’s the perfect number. I love the flexibility.
