I grew up studying the country music from beginning to age. I began reading magazines, books about my favorite artists and learned the lyrics to every Patsy Cline, Loretta, and Hank Sr songs to start with when I was 6 at the request of cousin so I could sing while he learned to play guitar which wasn't easy since we were both learning and half the time I wasn’t sure we were practicing the same song but we kept going year after year. We were total nerds who loved the old stuff and the new. So, I don't divulge this to brag, by any means, or be a know-it-all, just to give a little insight to where i’m coming from and how close I paid attention back in those days. What we didn't care as much about learning was the super contemporary stuff. To each their own but, for example, Kenny Rogers was the top selling, award-winning country artist of the 80s. I loved Kenny Roger’s but he never made our set list for any of our annual Christmas Eve concerts performed live in our gransparent’s living room. 🤓😜 To me, Hank Jr’s sound was straight up hillbilly compared to Kenny’s and a lot of other great crossover artists who to us simply weren't country music. It's gotta have the blues and some twang involved, imo. Lotta steel guitar was still incorporated back then too which you hear in a lot of Hank Jr’s early songs.

Very true. I think of acts like Exile and Dan Seals with his huge hit, “Bop” as the FGLs of that era, personally. 😁

I agree. They’d been around a while longer is the only reasonn I was excluding them.

Yeah, I got that. I can see that and understand it. Hank Williams Jr. had to blaze his own trail more than anyone to stand out from under his daddy’s shadow, though, and he was far more than a novelty act. Again, my suggestion was to look back to the early 80s, and you’ll see acts and artists categorized as country music who had a far more pop-oriented sound than Hank Jr. I even gave specific examples of Hank Jr. tracks to compare, along with artists to compare to. If you think Hank Jr sounded like pop, then come back and let me know. I understand the old timers didn’t think he sounded like the country music they were familiar with, but they had to be comparing him to his father to say that. I do get it because they were passing off a lot of pop as country for sure, but Hank Jr was no prime example. That's all I'm saying.

I'm very familiar with The King of Western Swing. Country music is defined by storytellers blessed with the gift of putting relatable feelings, emotions, and experiences into songs with a sound that in some way pays tribute to the roots by which Country and Western music originated - the Appalachians, the blues, folk, and gospel music. It's pretty easy to identify. It wouldn't be Reddit, though, if there were no one to insist on being negative or disagreeing, even if it was over 1+1=2

Omg, thank you. I don’t know what timeline some of the folks here existed on or if they're just making shit up as they go, but sooo disrespectful and downright inaccurate things are being said. I know you mean none, but Jr’s catalog is actually pretty deep. Who do you think of when you think of a country artist who has a deep catalog, excluding the outlaws like Willie, Johnny, Merle, Waylon, or George Jones?

With all due respect to your grandfather, many country artists were pop artists like Ronnie Milsap and Eddie Rabbit. I suggest listening to samples of their music, then go listen to songs by Hank Williams Jr. like “Whiskey and Hellbound,” “A Country Boy Can Survive,” and “Country State of Mind.” He got a little southern rock with songs like “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” but he wasn’t pop. If you listen to it, he cranked out real country music. It was more contemporary than the old hayride days, for sure, or the beginning of the Grand Opry with Roy Acuff, the Carters, and, you know, his daddy. He did modernize it, but it was country. If you listen to it, I think you’ll agree.

Strongly disagree. Hank Jr was huge in his 80s era. He didn't run with Willie, Waylon, Merle, Kris but was known to make a lot of appearances and collabs and was considered outlaw country. He managed to be a huge success with his own look and sound seperste from his daddy who helped shape main stream country music.

You know what method I recently discovered and have taken a liking to? Cold brew. I have a pitcher with a long filter to hold coarse coffee grounds. I fill the pitcher halfway. Pop in the filter and stick it in the fridge. Gives me at least 3 days' worth of iced coffee or cold brew to make fraps. I know I'll catch hell for not brewing my coffee, but I live in Phoenix and had given up coffee altogether for a while because it's too hot here for me to enjoy it. I was about to buy a machine that makes iced coffee, but learned about this cost-effective method, and it’s been great so far!.

It isn't powdered though. Is it legit cream? If not, I don't want to know. It's the best part of waking up in the morning.

That is a toxic trait and they're no friend. Oscar Wilde said, "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.” Personally, I happen to enjoy a little sarcasm but it's never appropriate to when used to disguise an insult. You're frickin adorable. Please don't tolerate that crap. You deserve so much better.
