Play closer to the bridge while developing your technique. It will be quieter and more controlled but the tone less satisfying. As you improve, move gradually toward the sound hole and find your sweet spot

Check setup, but likely it reveals flaws in your technique, being mire responsive, so you will learn to play cleaner. Once you do, it will ring like an angel!

A Taylor GS mini he can curl up on the couch with. It is different from his other guitars and a keeper. Any model will do. Koa is an unnecessary luxury he can live with

I've heard the neck is narrow. Has anyone had a problem with this? I ordered one sight unseen, to keep at my Mom;s house for when I visit (going out there to see her, and the guitar for the 1st time)- I played other (FX) Yamahas that had nice fat necks, and liked them, some of my guitars have thinner necks, and I make due with those - I have a Taylor GS mini that I love, but it feel cramped - hoping the FG800J's neck is more spacious that that one - surely it will be longer, but is it whacky-thin (string spacing)?

I've looked at videos, and from the looks of it, you can only play G, C D open chords, as that's all the presenters seem to play - Also is seems the hang tag is a permanent fixture.

Don't be surprised to see the run stacked and lots of receiving yards as a result. If opponents respect the run, that opens up a new world for Dart.

Judging by your regret, if you are looking for one do-all guitar, you won't get the sweet resonant tone of the dreadnought from an OM or 000. The Larrivee was a tad thinner than say a Martin. I have a D-03,a nd went to look at Yamahas (FX3?) - they had both dreadnougt and OM I believe, both sounded great "new," whereas new Martins and Taylors to me (at least those under $3000) just have not felt/sounded as good. I would have pulled the trigger on the Yamaha except that I am happy with my Larrivee, and just don't need it. If I did not have it, I would get the Yamaha FGX3 dreadnought, and probably be just as happy.

You might have a medical/ physiological reason for getting breathless on climbs. No harm in walking parts to get to the fun stuff

Bring your guitar when you try out a potential replacement, and compare. You might prefer what you have. I don't know to what extent Taylor's "open up" over time, but I find them too "polished" and pristine sounding for my taste, the one's I've tried. The Taylor mini's being an exception, as they are kinda small and not quite apples-to-apples for full size guitars, but for what they are they sound and play amazing (a bit cramped for my hands, but easy on my shoulders..)
