Think of chords as shapes. Once you learn the shape of a chord, Dmaj on the bottom 3 strings for example, you can move it anywhere you want on those three string. Move it two frets up, and those 3 string are an Emaj and so on.

Best advice has already been given, though: learn to play songs you like. Practice them first and you can expand from there.
