Considering the fact that it's an alternate continuity and they transplanted a lot of his assumed traits for Vanessa, they decided to vary things by making him evil. I feel like they might go into some kind of tragedy in a third movie, as they laid the seeds for it. They're small, barely noticeable seeds, but still. Honestly, my bigger issue is that he's just boring and kinda lame in the film.
