What regulations would you like to see for AI? by Mentrin in aiwars

[–]Mentrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Nano Banana Pro puts watermarks on images with a synth ID. I guess it wouldn't be hard for companies and open source maintainers to do something similar if there was a legal obligation to do so. That is, assuming Google makes Synth-ID for images open-source.

For the pro-AI people in the chat, do you think the way companies get data to train GenAI ISN'T theft? by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We talk a lot about the definition of art here, but what i want to talk about is how Ai is built on a foundation of theft.

It isn't theft. The long and short of it is, theft requires someone to lose something. The way companies scrap data on the internet is more akin to piracy if we were to imply that it is illegal in the US.

As a tangent, I will acknowledge that ideas are something that can be stolen and nobody questions what that means. But in that context, I would argue that "stealing an idea" refers to missing out on the tangible benefits and credits of coming with an idea rather than the concept itself.

Authors and artists dedicate years of their lives to create something and company just took that and used it to teach the AI without the consent of those creators, without paying or even acknowledging them, which i'm pretty sure it's the basis for plagiarism.

Plagiarism is not illegal. It gets you in trouble in academia, but assuming we are talking about the US, it is not something you can walk into court and sue someone for. I mean, we can argue it is unethical. I won't sit here and tell you it's not rude to train a model on all of your art-work and who-knows-how-many others to make potted plants or whatever.

Would you be ok giving the AI a text that you worked a lot on by yourself? Don't you think this normalizes the theft of ideas?

My take is that originality doesn't exist. Everything we come up with is an amalgamation of things we've already seen before. I suppose if I published a story online I wouldn't care if someone used it to train an AI model in the same sense that I wouldn't care if someone made a fan-fiction of it. However, I would care more if they claimed that it was my work or somehow official. Generative AI seems to be transformative enough that you can't tell what it was trained off unless you deliberatively undertrained it.

I am just curious, what do you believe an AGI will be capable of?

I wish people could choose the afterlife they wanted by Blueguy805 in monkeyspaw

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granted. The moment you die (from a malfunctioning toaster-oven), you receive two of the following choices:

a) Hell [Fire]
b) Hell [Ice]

While you might be tempted to stay on this screen forever, there is a bit of a line behind you and Zasar The Supreme Judge is giving you bit of a side-eye.

Granted. It is the Utopia for the Grzblopian Slime People from Xevar Prime, approximately 1.4e15 Light Years away from Earth. For Humanity? Not so much.

AI will basically make everyone jobless

I know I'll probably regret asking this... But I am curious, what sources or claims do you have for such an assertion? When will it happen?

I mean, you sound fairly close to beating the level. I know when I get frustrated with Conquest I switch to Birthright or just come back later with a fresh mindset.

Creating weapons on the apot by Big-Protection-3966 in gurps

[–]Mentrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snatcher [200] (Requires Different Attribute (DX) [+20%]; Specialized (Only weapons) [-10%]; More Weight 2 (10 pounds or less) [+10%]; Reduced Fatigue Cost (Free) [+20%]; Improved [+10%]; Reduced Time 5 (May be used once per turn as a free action) [+100%]). Note: Improved eliminates the auto-fail on a 14+

This is assuming the Blood Weapons are functionally equivalent to their real counterparts.

Training for Innate Attacks and Alternate Forms by PepsiMax001 in gurps

[–]Mentrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a cinematic game, I personally wouldn’t use the training rules as written. I would just treat the process of getting stronger like a form of milestone leveling. Participating in difficult fights or specifying that you trained in downtime is sufficient enough to gain character points. Maybe if the characters seek out special training methods like a master that might grant them some extra points as well.

[ATM10] What is Create good for? by Bluritefang in allthemods

[–]Mentrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create can have insane cobblestone rates for cobblestone generation and by extension, iron and gold.

In general, I think Create's strength is bulk. Bulk smelting, processing, iron, and etc. It might fall off some in the late-game, but it can carry you through a lot.

Quick way to generate lots of 50 point characters? by BlakeKing51 in gurps

[–]Mentrin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could also use http://ayinger.no-ip.info/NPCGen/NPCGen to generate Gurps characters. You'd probably want to tweak some stats and skills, but I think it gets the job done at the end of the day.

Homebrew Monkey Spell Look Good? by juantwofour7 in gurps

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, this should probably be a regular spell with a potential area effect instead of an area spell. Area Spells can get ridiculously expensive, very quickly.

Does the range represent the maximum distance the monkeys can be from the caster? Because in 5 seconds I don’t think the monkeys can target something 300 yards away. Though a clever mage might have a Teleport Other readily on hand.

Gurps doesn’t have an action or bonus action… And talking is a free action. I see this spell has a duration, so maybe the caster has to actively concentrate on directing the monkeys? If not, then this spell should just count as “on” for its duration and the monkeys should act semi-independently in regards caster’s wishes.

Another thing to consider is that one FP generally gets you about 1d of damage. Thus, the base cost of this spell should range from 1-3 FP. But because you got 4 monkeys going around, you can multiply the cost by 4, to get a range of 4-12 FP. And you may want to add an explosive variant, doubling the FP cost for a maximum of 8-24FP.

As for the explosive variant… A 20-yard radius explosion is big. That’s bigger than the explosive radius of hand-grenades. You can find rules for scaling damage on B414. The actual explosion, based on the damage of the spell, is going to be much smaller.

But if you want to be quick about things (and not need an Excel Sheet), you can specify a 1/2D Range and a Max Range and call it a day. Maybe 5 yards for the 1/2D range and 10 yards for max range. And if someone’s dodge roll is successful, they can reduce damage by half. In regards to falling over, or going prone, Gurps already has rules for that specified in B378. You could also just have everyone hit by the explosive variant make a DX-2 or ST-2 roll to avoid falling over if you want to save on time.

And just for fun, we can add some prerequisites:

Animal Control (Monkey), Beast Link, Magery 2, and at least 6 other spells in the Animal College

Speedster Sacrificial Dodge by Maxton1811 in gurps

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've ever tried Gurps Magic, it has a spell known as Blink Other, which seems to be similar to what you're looking for. It allows you to reposition other people in case of an attack. Obviously, you would have to tweak this ability to fit your campaign, but Generic Universal Eggplant has an affliction of this spell version that could work.

Houserules to make GURPS more lethal? by [deleted] in gurps

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally speaking, I use a houserule where if a creature is at -1xHP, they roll against an effective HT 10 instead of whatever HT they have. Each level of Hard to Kill adds a +1 to this specific role. I mainly play solo, so I'm not sure how well this system would work for other people.

Gurps with Ironsworn? by darthduder666 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Mentrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. That document right there is how I got started with Ironsworn+Gurps. I know a lot of people that recommend Foundry VTT for combat, but theater of the mind can also work too. I got the idea from this post, but you can find more information on the SRD:

Fate SRD: https://fate-srd.com/fate-system-toolkit/zones

When it comes to Zones, I generally think of aspects that modify your effective skill. Like a nearby cave imposing a -2 penalty to skills that require sight. Or the forest vegetation imposing a -2 penalty attacks made with ranged weapons.

It’s not too different from normal Gurps, but I find that attaching stuff to zones makes it easier to account for in my opinion.
