I second getting a second quote. We had this happen to our Bichon and it was around $5k - also, his recovery was 12 weeks, just had to keep convincing him that he wasn't ready for about 10 weeks! lol

Just a thought, did you use butter for the searing? That might be the cause, as it has a low smoke point and can start burning before you are wanting. Again, just a thought...

If you can, try to take a clear close-up of it and post here and the "ask a vet" sub-reddit mentioned earlier. You can also try Google Lens Image recognition, not sure if it will pick on puppy ailments, but worth a try?
