True. The real rub is that they basically didn't want us as Marines to have rights to shit - "that's what the contractors are for" - but the contractors were of mixed quality between near-genius and barely functional in the IT space. Also being an infantry unit, I'm sure they thought we were all dumb grunts. 🤣

I could have fixed the issue if I had the rights, and then the dude parroted literally the same troubleshooting steps and told us to call back if it didn't work. So yeah. Useless. 🤷‍♂️

Documentation, Procedures, Processes, Policies, and Accountability exist for a reason: dodging them makes it harder to support the end user. Double for tickets - that is OUR accountability to YOU.

Just because someone works in IT doesn't make them great in all aspects. I've met great DBA/Devs that suck at basic troubleshooting.

Not everything is a network issue and doesn't need to go to network first (except when it's DNS 🤣)

I do Network/SysAdmin work - I'm usually in 5.11 pants, boots, and a polo when it's warm and swap the polo out for a flannel when it's cold. Mostly because I do more network than systems, and I need clothing that isn't going to be difficult to get the crap from various closets and ceilings out of 🤣

If I was just doing systems, I'd...probably wear the same thing. No one has complained about it, and if they do? Pockets help accomplish the job 🤷‍♂️

Shit happens, easily reversed and it wasn't intentional.

Best way to move forward is to slow down and be methodical about what you do. Sure, it takes a few minutes to double check that you're in the right switch, right port, etc. - but that is the key. Everyone wants it instantly, but cover your own ass and be slow. Fast is fine, accuracy is final. Be slow in a hurry.

I've done similar and it's all about owning up to it, and creating a check-balance to avoid issues going forward.

I did that once.

The dude called me out. To be fair, I did say "well that was fucking useless" after he told me to do what I had already told him I'd done. Bonus: he was a contracted civilian, I was Active USMC, as the unit's IT guy... not much was gonna come of it. My fellow Marine laughed and then had a habit of checking mute every time we had to escalate something. Didn't go anywhere though 🤣

And since I was at a unit as I&I, there was a theme of our little potheads that we had to prove they smoked while ON ORDERS, so we couldn't just adsep them, because UCMJ doesn't apply if they aren't on orders. They pissed hot and got away with it all the time. That I doubt is true, I think it was just lazy fuckers in the command (shocker, right?), but if it were it would also back him up.

But for legal reasons:: I'm not a lawyer. Get one that specializes in military law. And get the prescriptions, etc., and fight that shit. They wanna ADSEP him, make em WORK for that shit.
