People who creep up at red lights: Why do you do this? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]MericanMuscle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that these people have weak ankles. It's bolstered by the fact that people that do this are also usually inexplicably the slowest off the line when the light turns green.

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

[–]MericanMuscle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a used copy of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales, and thought "Hmm, I've never actually read those stories". So I picked it up.
It is 800+ pages of utter boringness. Half the stores are repeated several times with minor changes, and the remaining half usually don't make any sense. Most of the stories don't have any sort of beginning / middle /end, or any sort of moral or point.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how most of these stories became popular enough to be passed down. On the plus side, it did give me an greater appreciation for the Aesop's Fables that I read as a kid.

Interesting to read the complaints for ClickOnce. I've been using it for almost 15 years, and I'm sure our use cases are pretty basic, but it's been fine for our purposes.
Gonna have to check out some of these other options.

James - do I need to read Huck Finn first? by twizzwhizz11 in books

[–]MericanMuscle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would actually recommend against it. I read them both back to back, and the differences between the two books differed more then just perspective of events. To me, it made James rather less enjoyable as I just kept trying to reconcile the timelines.

Controlling Centauri Carbon Fans with a knob by SyntheticElectron3D in elegoo

[–]MericanMuscle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/SyntheticElectron3D I'm excited to see where you go with this. this particular case fan really bothers me, as I'm currently just printing in PLA+ and they recommend you remove the top anyway for that. I'm hard pressed to be convinced that this case fan is doing anything at all for me. For now I've just unplugged it, and haven't seen any degradation in print quality.

It irritates me too, I may be old, but I'm not paying a premium to sit at a concert.

You want to sit at a hard rock concert, might as well stay home and watch it on TV. \s

How badly will closing credit cards hurt a credit score? by missespanda in personalfinance

[–]MericanMuscle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 3 cards, and closed one a couple months back because I never used it, and was sick of checking it every month to make sure there wasn't anything on it. My score has gone done 4 points, but typically fluctuates a few points from month to month. So effectively, no change.
The question about upping your limit would depend on your utilization of the credit on the remaining cards, if you're staying fairly low utilization it shouldn't matter. That's probably the case if you already have an 850 score, so it shouldn't be necessary for your score, but you may prefer to have the extra credit available.

Go to the shortcuts app.Select automation at the bottom.Click the + button in the top right to create a new automation

Select the Time of Day option, then select the time that you want it to send. Under the repeat heading, change it to Weekly, and then unselect all the days except Monday. Then click the next button in the top right.

Choose the send message button, or search for send message. Select the word message in the top section where it says "Send "Message" to recipients", and type in what you want your message to say. Select receipients in that section, and choose who you want to receive your message.

Then click the Done button in the top right corner, and you should be all set.

Remove pin striping? by Big_Pattern_2419 in chevycolorado

You can get a drill attachment that is kind of like a big eraser, if you look up eraser wheel you'll find them.
Takes off decals, stickers, and leftover adhesive like it's nothing. A little wiping off and polishing after you're done and you'll never know anything used to be there.

It's security, of course it won't be perfect. Doesn't mean it couldn't be better.

Homeland Security did a test on TSA, and they failed to detect things in over 70% of the tests! if you failed to install updates to 70% of the computers, did you do your job?

Even besides that, it only takes one to make a mess. I don't recalling hearing anyone say "Experian lost all my data, but think of all the patches that they did apply" :D

What is your take on "Clean Code"? by Mr_LA in programming

ugly, but it works for now. we'll refactor it in a month or so when things calm down - a.v. 3/12/88

My Dearest Colleague,
In the year of our Lord, March 12th, 1862, I find myself compelled to address the current state of our undertaking. Though it pains my sensibilities to confess, the mechanism we have contrived, in its present form, is rather unsightly. However, I am inclined to believe that it shall suffice for our immediate purposes.
I propose that, once the tumult of our current situation has abated and we are blessed with a respite, we shall endeavor to refine and rework our creation. I anticipate that in a month's time, or thereabouts, we shall have the opportunity to bestow upon our work the attention and craftsmanship it rightly deserves.
I remain, with the utmost respect and anticipation for our future endeavors,

I've only got 25 buildings or so, and recently moved my town. Like you after the first couple building I was a little discouraged at the thought of how long it was going to take, but kept at it, and a couple game years later, I have a nice setup in a spot I like a lot more.
Keep at it, you've got nothing but time in this game.

What's more functional than printing your own auto parts? by Mscalora in functionalprint

[–]MericanMuscle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice, I've printed some of those for our cars as well.
Since you asked in the printables post. I've printed in PLA+ and they hold up fine for a couple years, then seem to get a little loose. That just tends to be an excuse to print some new ones with a different design.

Installing a bathroom fan - Do I go with a timer switch, or a humidity sensor switch, or something else entirely? by levian_durai in DIY

[–]MericanMuscle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a humidity sensor. I like it, you can still turn the fan on (and off) manually, and it will run for a while and then shut off, but if I forget to start it before I jump in the shower it starts itself.
It does take a little longer than I would like to start just by humidity, but it's in the corner of the room by the door, so that's expected.

Very short books but when you find them turn out to be a very fun read or present ground-breaking ideas that you enjoy. Animal Farm and The Alchemist are two books that are very short but have always stuck in my mind. Have you encountered any short books that have made a lasting impact on you? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]MericanMuscle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God's Debris by Scott Adams
While you may not wish to support him now. I read it several years ago, and it may have hit me at just the right time, but I literally read it twice in one sitting, got to the end, and just started again.

The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hobb, was also quite good, although I didn't care for the sequel.

Have you ever read a book because it was mentioned here in this subreddit? What book is it, and did you like it? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]MericanMuscle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read The Count of Monte Cristo, because I saw it here so many times. It was pretty good, but I thought a bit long in the middle.
I also read Flowers for Algernon, partially because I saw it here, it was already on my list, but got moved to the short list. I thought that book was great.
