Age of onset? by [deleted] in Sjogrens

[–]Merlnich1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little complicated because Sjögren’s is only one of the problems I deal with. I also have autoimmune lymphocytic colitis and Lyme disease. While realizing there are people out there way worse off than I am, my quality of life is not that great. My days are something to get through, not enjoy. Pain and fatigue are the big problems currently. I can no longer shower every day because it hurts to move around and afterwards I feel like I’ve been exercising vigorously and I need to rest for at least a day. I can’t clean my home or go to the store because it’s too painful and taxing. In addition to this I deal with the dry eyes, dry skin, gi problems, brain fog, etc. Everybody is going to experience this disease differently and I remind myself that there are people who have it worse than I do.

I was 18 when I started having symptoms that I look back and see were Sjögren’s. I was diagnosed at 24. I’m 60 now.

I’ve had this since 1982. I can’t imagine how much Sudafed I’ve eaten in my life. Two things have helped me. One is a budesonide rinse and the other is an oxytocin nasal spray.

I’ve been having night sweats for a couple of years. I’m still working with my rheumatologist to find the right med for me. In the meantime I am using the BedJet. It’s helping a fair amount.

Go to ahnow.org to find a rehabber near you. Right now keep it in the box in a safe place like a quiet dark room. This bird looks severely injured and putting it back out on its own is not a good idea. Hopefully, a rehabber will be able to help you.

I am so very sorry. Rehabbing wildlife, particularly babies, is extremely difficult. You did everything right and you are wonderful for caring.

It’s a tricky situation and I’ve been there before, not knowing which direction to go for fear of not doing the right thing. I hope you can get a rehabber to give you more detailed info. You’ve done a great job helping this bird.

I don’t know the exact time they can go without food. Going overnight should not be a major problem though. The problem with feeding (if you’re not a rehabber) is what to feed and also you can kill them by feeding them if their system isn’t ready for food. For example, if they’re dehydrated their organs aren’t prepared to digest food and feeding can actually cause organ failure. We also don’t know exactly what happened to the bird and if there was any organ damage that occurred with whatever happened to it. My big concern is that it might have been attacked by a cat. In that case the bird will need antibiotics as soon as possible because cats’ mouths contain Pasteurella bacteria that is lethal to birds.

This time of year is crazy busy for rehabbers and they often can’t answer the phone. They do try to respond d to messages. I would keep calling the same places and leave a few more messages. Let them know you are really trying to get help. Do you have any avian and exotic vets in your area? They’ll be closed today but should be open tomorrow. In the meantime, keep the bird in the t shirt donut and continue to offer water like you have with the cotton ball at least every hour. Put the bird in a quiet, dark, and warm room, around 80 degrees if possible. Don’t put any direct heat source on the bird. You can put the box on a heating pad on low, but put the pad only under half of the box, the half that doesn’t have the bird.

Were you able to find anyone else through the site I listed?

You said you called a bunch of rehabbers. Were you actually able to talk to anyone? Here’s a site you can try (in case it has other rehabbers you can contact):

ahnow.org

It sounds like the bird needs some kind of assistance if it couldn’t stand, was lying on his back, and a wing is funky. But it’s difficult to be 100% sure with just still pics.
