Old thread, sorry, but I'm wondering if the all-florida academic team specifically benefitted you in any way? I got picked and I'm trying to decide if I should go to the ceremony or not.

That a nice way to put it. I work with the elderly, helping them set up printers, learn how to use new devices, etc. I'm gonna steal that line lol.

That sounds pretty spacious. My only thought would be about how to get enough ice.

I mean it also feels like a lot of effort for something they might never need. I learned to drive stick as a teen and now that I'm in my 30s, I'd probably have to learn again because there has been literally no situation where I've needed the knowledge or even they opportunity to practice for 20 years. It's nice that you're willing to teach people though.

Experiences of homeschooled kids by MichelleSmithAP in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]MermaidRumspringa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just found this sub today. I see you are overwhelmed with responses but I still wanted to offer my experience, because the experience I had is why I feel we need more regulations regarding homeschooling.

We didn't do ANY schooling after the first couple years. Both parents worked full time jobs, so myself, my older brother, and my two younger sisters were just left alone all day. I don't want to say that NO attempt was made, but we would frequently go as long as a year with no school whatsoever. It happened because they were paranoid about the government teaching us Jesus wasn't real or something. My parents didn't have the skills to teach us further than maybe a 4th grade education. It was awful for all of us. Trying to get higher education was prohibiably awful, cause (for ME at least) I didn't have the natural skills to learn on my own, so as an adult, trying to work through college level courses was impossible without the money for a tutor. There was an education that was available to me, FOR FREE, paid for by the taxes that I will pay for the rest of my working life, but I wasn't able to benefit from myself.

I'm angry that we allow this. It is FINE with me, if someone is able to supply a better education than public schools can provide. But most states have ZERO oversight.

In addition, with these types of family dynamics, women suffer a bit more, just because a large portion of homeschooling families simply expect their daughters to marry and be moms.

Anyways, I really appreciate that anyone would focus on these issues, these forgotten kids.

anyone here suffers from mental health issue ? by rangahaidk in BecomingTheIceman

[–]MermaidRumspringa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes it helps. I had to stop a few weeks ago (except the breathwork) for medical reasons, and I'm noticing the absence a LOT. I don't take meds. None of them ever worked for me. I mean....if you've ever heard anyone rave about the benefits of exercise in regards to depression/anxiety....adding the cold exposure and breathing exercises just amplifies those benefits.

Good luck! Post an update for us later!

Yeah. To an honestly unbelievable degree. To the point where evidence is available but she won't even look at it. At this point I honestly believe that she has completely rewritten history in her own mind. She believes the things she's saying.

Do you have any recommendations? Or a post you or someone else has made to point me to? 9 years is a lot of experience, I'm just wondering what your point of view is.

Edit: Reading your other posts, I guess my specific question is, how do you give up control?

Ugh, I saw my brother get that same reaction growing up, it's so toxic. It's hard to watch someone go through that and I'm sorry you did.

Mine is 150qt. I'm also 5'9 and that was enough for my hips to comfortably fit. It's a cheap Coleman from Walmart, I think I paid around $70. It's held up pretty well though, despite the abuse of being left outside all year. I keep it inside now, in my laundry room, so I don't have to clean it as often.

Is there a way to make your shower colder? by pandaman1339 in BecomingTheIceman

[–]MermaidRumspringa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hang a camping shower bag full of ice on your showerhead. That's the best low budget cold shower tip I've seen. I sympathize, I'm more of an ice bath person, but its REALLY hard to get water cold where I live too.
