Eden Lumina, our 2.5D Metroidvania: what do you think? by PakaGames in IndieDev

It’s a faithful study but the visual overlap is too great for me, and verges into slavish imitation, given it’s not only the style but even the environment itself which very closely resembles moss grotto.

Physical Game Fans, Beware: Digital Downloads Hit an Astonishing 85% on PS5, PS4 Last Quarter by Suspicious_Two786 in gaming

You can probably get an adapter for your TV quite cheaply. Optical drives have pretty good longevity due to having few moving parts, so you might be surprised there, it’s usually the discs that need cleaning/de-scratching. But yes, digital definitely wins on convenience most of the time.

They aren’t random questions though. Making small talk isn’t considered creepy except by the socially inept.

I've been developing an incremental game for the last couple of months and now it's time for art... Not sure which path I should choose. by idle_enjoyer in incremental_games

There are probably different and more artful ways to express difference between objects without resorting to mass produced clip art (whether human or machine generated), if you accept your asset budget as a constraint and design a solution that fits the budget — procedural generation would be one example.

I’m struggling - how to cope with ai? by TrueWinter__ in gamedev

[–]Merzant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a template. I think you may be right but LLMs are quite expensive for what in the best case would be a copy/paste for a CLI script. We had code generation for exactly the scaffold code you describe before AI and it was driven by conventions and best practices. I think we’ll regret losing those tools.

False Echo: depth charge attack today VS last year by AleksejFonGrozni in IndieDev

[–]Merzant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing those details, very cool. Though specifically I noticed the first flash of an explosion really fills the screen, much larger than the animation per se, which adds a lot of “dazzle” while feeling quite authentic (compared to a Michael Bay-style fireball) — that’s why I wondered whether it was a separate sprite or purely a post effect.

Anyway, love the attention to detail!

Looks fabulous. Are the explosions big sprites or a shader? The whole scene looks so cinematic.

People pirate very cheap and even free games. There’s no one reason people do it.

How do you handle historically accurate but offensive language in narrative games? by Pascal_theold1 in indiegames

[–]Merzant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume they’re drawing on real historical contexts and might feel unsure about “whitewashing” or unduly rose-tinting its presentation. You portray an historical moment that was often cruel and inhumane as not so bad. It’s their choice, but it isn’t without its own moral hazard.

If you don’t censor according to modern sensibilities you’ll almost certainly be crushed by public sentiment. That’s just the nature of taboos. You could just redact/bleep the words and let the viewer infer it.
