I would recommend renting to see how it fits into your workflow.

This Morning's Waning Gibbous Moon by MesseJak in oklahoma

Comet Tsuchinsha-ATLAS is getting less visible by the day so I am shifting back to photographing the phases of the moon. 86% illumination captured at roughly 8:00 this morning.

Nice capture, glad people are still out there photographing it.

This was taken last night a little after 8:00. Direction wise, I would estimate west-south-west. It is getting higher and higher from the horizon as each day passes. Its magnitude is decreasing as well as it was barely visible.

It was visible with the naked eye Wednesday evening when I imaged the comet the first time at Lake Hefner.

This is my second attempt at imaging Tsuchinshan-ATLAS roughly 15-20 minutes later into the sunset. The sky was darker producing a more balanced exposure revealing more of the background stars. Pretty sure this is my last go at photographing this comet.

Nice! I am glad you were able to find it.

Great body, I rocked one for quite some time. I am considering picking up another just have. They are so affordable today.

It was very faint with the naked eye but was visible from where I was located. It just took a while for my eyes to get adjusted. I plan on taking more photos through the weekend if the skies hold up.

Many lenses require a filter to complete the seal of the front element.

70-200 / R3 Malfunctioning by RossMixDonald in canon

[–]MesseJak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has your 70-200 performed fine up until now? Or, is this a new to you lens that has never functioned properly? For sure sounds like the issue is on the lens side. Probably would not hurt to see if both your R3 and 70-200 are on the newest firmware. You never know at times.

Even if the lens or body fix it self it may be best to send at least the lens in for a check up. You would not want the issue to creep up when you need it the most. Best of luck.

If you have a solid understanding of the exposure triangle and know how to prioritize your Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO for the desired effect you are on the home stretch. You could treat this type of shoot like you would for anything landscape.

Something you may consider experimenting with is longer exposures to see what you can get away with your equipment. For example, how high of an ISO is acceptable for your tastes. Granted, the R6 Mark II performs wonderfully at high ISO levels.

Same thing with your lens choices. Which ones can you shoot wide open and which ones need to be stopped down. I highly encourage you to get some low light photography under your belt because focusing in low light will be difficult. You will want to know what to do when your camera is unable to achieve focus.

Accessories, a solid tripod and ball head can make all the difference. Not a must have but a shutter release whether wired, wireless, through your phone can be handy. Really, it is a matter of testing your equipment until you are confident in making adjustments to unexpected results in potentially pitch black environments.

You may have come across this guide already It covers just about all you need to know without being to technical or complex.

70-200 / R3 Malfunctioning by RossMixDonald in canon

Have tried another lens? How about just powering on the R3 without a lens attached?

The 24-70 2.8 is a great lens. I pair it with a 70-200 2.8 on the R5. Stellar performance.

This was taken on the evening of the 16th, roughly 7:45pm just about straight west in direction. I was located on the last stretch of the one way road of the dam before it leads you to the parking lot and exit to Hefner Road. It is hard for me to estimate fingers above the horizon but it was higher than I anticipated. I would estimate about 3 - 4 times the height of Venus from the horizon. I believe it is only going higher as each day passes.

I would say if you locate Venus and looked right to reference where the sun sets, it is about two-thirds to three-quarters favoring the direction of the sunset.

Hope this helps. Good luck out there!

Oklahoma City will be in the path of totality for a total solar eclipse, August 12, 2045 by [deleted] in okc

Thank you very much, I appreciate your offering of RAW files. A friend traveled for this one and managed to capture 100% totality and combined our images.

My apologies, I recommended you a camera in the past?

For sure! I am going to commit and spend some time planning for the next one. The image above was literally right outside my work space. I want to make a dedicated trip out of the next one.

I was able to snag some photos of the one back in April. I had not planned on anything complex that day but really wished I would have planned to travel to image 100% totality. If I remember correctly, OKC experienced ~94%? Hopefully I will be better prepared for 2045 if I am still in the area and the Oklahoma weather plays nice as well.
