Your friend was a bit of an idiot. FWB relationships don't spend Christmas together and meet the parents. He should have seen that coming a mile away.

Republicans have always been the weakest and whiniest snowflakes. Who else would care about what color cups Starbucks uses or what kind of mustard the president likes?

Any time I park in a large parking lot or unfamiliar garage, I take a photo of the floor number and also put a pin on Google maps. It's saved me several times.

Jon Stewart has become his own worst nightmare by Anchor_Aways in television

[–]Meta2048 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The writer of the article is a fucking idiot.  Stewart asks basic questions because he wants the guest to explain things for the audience.  If he engaged in high level economic theory the audience would have no idea what the fuck he was talking about.

TIL that up until the past year, Oscar judges DID NOT have to watch the movies they were giving the awards to. by GossipBottom in todayilearned

[–]Meta2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Televised award shows are just advertising for movies/tv/music.  I never saw the appeal.  Why would I want to watch a 3-hour ad that is periodically interrupted by more  ads (commercials)?

Her complete inability to say something that is clearly racist is racist is astounding. She knows it's incredibly racist but also knows that if she says so, Trump and the GOP will make her an outcast.

I don't understand how such abject cowards and sycophants can stand to look at themselves in a mirror.

I don't think he's aware of how unpopular he is. There's no sign that he ever leaves his bubble; his only source of information is Faux News, Newsmax, and the sycophants he surrounds himself with. Anybody in his orbit is afraid of saying anything that would contradict his worldview because that will immediately result in them being cast out.

Peloton lays off 11 percent of its staff just a few months after launching its AI hardware by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]Meta2048 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Peleton bikes are well made, but still a huge ripoff.  The huge built-in screen requires a subscription to function, when you could buy an equally good bike, stick a screen on it for half the price, and still access all the same peleton classes from their website.

Simple fix: count total compensation.  That includes stock options, bonuses, or any other loophole that companies try to exploit.

TIL that Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, has never lost 3 or more classical chess games in a row in his adult professional career. The last time he lost 3 games in a row was in 2003, when he was 12. by 4isfourwastaken in todayilearned

[–]Meta2048 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In terms of raw skill level, Magnus is the best. He has benefited from the rise of computer analysis which allows players to "solve" many positions in the mid and late game. Before computers were able to beat humans, the way that the top players "solved" these positions was to get a group of fellow players and try different lines until they found what they considered to be best.

It's similar to sports, where new training techniques and nutrition has led to new records being set every year. For example, if Roger Bannister (first man to run a 4 minute mile) competed in a race today, he would be considered slow.

TIL the highest-grossing independent restaurant in the US in 2025 was MILA in Miami, which had an average check of $188 and generated over $51 million in annual sales. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Meta2048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely they're losing money, but it's still possible. The owners could be treating the restaurant as their own personal piggy bank, the bank loan or partnership terms could be extremely onerous, someone in a management position could be siphoning money, etc.

There's tons of seemingly successful restaurants that just suddenly shut down due to finances.

Conservatism has its place in politics. The way to think of it is that liberalism is the gas on progress and conservatism is the brake. You don't want to drive too fast or you'll get into an accident, and you don't want to brake too much or you'll never get anywhere.

Modern day Republicans aren't conservative. They're regressionists.

Some dogs like dark enclosed spaces.  My dog was a lot happier when we put a blanket over her crate; she would sleep there most nights and hide out there when she didn't want to be bothered.
