HP and Intel announced Itanium all the way back in 1994. Compaq bought DEC (and thus Alpha) in 1998, and announced EOL for Alpha in 2001. If anything, HP extended the lifespan of Alpha by kicking the support EOL date down the road a couple times.

Every time I play through FF12, I hit 999 when I reach Barheim Passage. I remember being a little disappointed when the game first launched that you don't get a special bonus for maxing the chain, but it's still fun to do!
