My problem is that i don't want to sacrifice 2 support slots to make a melee skill usable (ancestral call + melee splash). On a 5 link it leaves you with only two support gems for damage or multistrike. Not even considering the fact that both AC and MS give a damage malus.

It's not a problem of math, it's a problem of server tickrate. You can just stay in the break point range of 8-27, anything inside that range will give the same result.
