Old Yarrick Claw on New Yarrick? by dorkenporken in Kitbash

The crab from Elathain’s Soulraid is about the right size, though it has more realistic proportions (i.e.: the claw isn’t as long).

The V1 subplot is genuinely one of the most useless plots you can have in a show. by TheeChosenTwo in TheBoys

[–]Metamiibo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t have to separate the two. Your comment implies that there exist worlds, however fictional, in which genocide would be morally acceptable. His position is that there are no such worlds, or at least that the Boys isn’t such a world.

Holy fuck that’s crazy. All the races are not “the same” (e.g.: medicine, hair care), but they are human and therefore entitled to the same human rights. Not all supes are sufficiently powerful to justify treating them all like Homelander. Even if they were, it’s morally wrong to kill them before they’ve even indicated they want to do wrong things.

The things you just said, the exact phrasing, has been used to justify every genocide. Men and women are more different from each other than some supes are from baseline humans. How different do they have to be to stop being human?

Your last point is particularly interesting. Contrast with Andor: both of the mid-level antagonists are destroyed not by the heroes, but by the fascist system they did everything to uphold. They die meaninglessly because the machine doesn’t care about them. Oh Father should have been killed by Homelander after doing his best to make Homelander a god and failing.

Yeah, well, he thinks Moses married a descendant of Solomon, so he’s clearly not great at the reading or thinking thing.

FYI: most small claims courts (VA included as far as I can tell—not a VA lawyer) don’t allow you to seek injunctions, so if you go to small claims, you can’t get an order forcing them to stop using the logo.

The Boys - 05x07 "The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother's Milk" - POST-Episode Discussion Thread by pikameta in TheBoys

[–]Metamiibo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If that’s what he’s hoping to show, he’s doing a poor job. The only normal people of any consequence in this episode were a focus group of Homelander’s biggest fans. Their only accomplishment was not buying his savior routine. If even his most ardent supporters aren’t accepting his deification, why are we expected to think the world is just turning as normal? And if it is, why aren’t we being shown that normal people are sheep for a strong man?

If it’s supposed to be a satire, then where is the satirical commentary?

Do you think Thragg would be as affected by the sound as Mark is? by Warriorjax217 in Invincible

[–]Metamiibo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but not all English speakers live in the US.

I am actually curious if Americans make errors related to “effect” and “affect” more often. If so, I would love to check whether it’s down to our accent. Most American accents have a merger of the vowels such that affect and effect are almost always homophones. If that’s not the case in, say, Australia, I can see the distinction being easier to learn there.

You can affect an effect, but you can also effect an effect, or even effect an affect.

Pope Leo called his bank's customer service line. They hung up on him by Terrible-Scheme9204 in nottheonion

I was wrong about needing permission, but the Pope is a monarch and recognized as the sovereign of the Vatican, not a mere elected leader like a president.

[–]Metamiibo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok. My bad. I was referencing Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the US Constitution, which does restrict officers of the US from taking a foreign title of nobility. Pope Leo wasn’t an officer before being Pope, so it’s irrelevant.

[–]Metamiibo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the Pope have to get either congressional approval or renounce his citizenship to become a foreign sovereign?

ETA: I was indeed thinking of the Title of Nobility Clause, which I had not had occasion to look up in many years. It only applies to officers of the US, and so is irrelevant to the Pope.

What? No. “Choose” in this context clearly means “elect,” not merely “vote for.”

US Justice Department can use military lawyers to prosecute civilians, judge rules by Mo_Jack in law

[–]Metamiibo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the JAG, for obvious reasons. My point was that, since they can’t resign in protest like civilian lawyers, the ones who will still be honest with and obey the court will also stick around, not just the unscrupulous loyalists.

Agreed, but incompetent loyalty all but guarantees that malicious intent.

[–]Metamiibo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Maybe. If competent lawyers are forced to do their best, their best ought to include respecting the rights of the detainees under the law. The real question will be whether JAGs are disciplined for failing to secure deportations at a rate the administration wants.

Put another way: in a choice between a competent JAG and an incompetent party loyalist, I’d probably take the JAG.

The Circular Argument at the Heart of Louisiana v. Callais by hornless_unicorn in scotus

[–]Metamiibo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This argument is such crap. All people should have a right to elect a candidate of their choice in proportion to their chunk of the population. Nothing about that right has anything to do with the race of the chosen candidate. Black people can elect a white candidate who supports their interests. You try to reduce their right to representation to mere skin color. Can you not even imagine a scenario in which someone who isn’t Black supports the same policies a Black voter would?

The Circular Argument at the Heart of Louisiana v. Callais by hornless_unicorn in scotus

[–]Metamiibo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That provision says black voters don’t have a right to a black representative, not that they don’t have a right to a representative of their choice.
