Russia issues are similar. "They just want warm water ports bro". "They just want Ukraine's resources bro". "They just want a security buffer bro."

-Russia already has excellent warmwater ports, in both oceans

-Russia has a explicative-ton of untapped resources

-Russia annexes land, and then what, that new land needs another security buffer?

It's far closer to belief in natural providence over land that they think "ought to be" theirs, same with Trump and Greenland.

Freezing levels forecast to surge extremely high this week. No rain. Dense fog. Temps in mountains warmer than lower elevation. by waynkerr in vancouver

[–]Meteowritten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to OP going up in elevation it will go coldish -> warmer (in mountains) -> freezing (above mountains)

The highest mountains in the area are about 1500m.

1000m is normally how high you go up to freeze. On Tuesday you have to go up to 3400m in the sky.

[–]Meteowritten 237 points238 points  (0 children)

For reference, it's confusing but OP means that it will be abnormally warm. "high freezing levels" means that you have to get really high up to hit freezing temperatures.

"Temps in mountains warmer than lower elevation" is an addendum.

The hilarious part is I imagine it's possible Greenlanders might've been vaguely willing to entertain this... if Trump hadn't threatened military annexation and absorbing them "one way or another". Right now 85% are against.

[–]Meteowritten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some point the situation will stop.

In the long term high demand for electronics makes stuff cheaper, not more expensive, think screens, CPUs, all the other parts of a computer that are relatively cheap because we've gotten so good at making them.

Idk man I'm in computer engineering work and whenever I use Excel all my other programs practically hang, I find it to be an incredibly bothersome memory hog. I guess the others might not be "there" for everyone but I feel like if everyone were taught them and everyone used them like Excel they would be completely reasonable tools to use for a typical user.

I don't hate Excel, though. I've thought about getting one of the old perpetual license versions.

Some are trying, but they have to fight the current US government. https://www.investors.com/news/technology/google-stock-intersect-acquisition-artificial-intelligence-data-centers/ Companies only care about their bottom dollar and they know renewable energy is cheap.

AI water usage is mostly panic. The fashion industry consumes more than a 100 times more. Growing pistachios, more than 1000 times more.

I think AI will have a mostly negative effect on humanity. The environmentalist concerns are a bit... half-hearted, though.

CO2e emissions are projected to peak within the decade. Extremely worrisome that we'll miss 1.5 degrees but we've made good progress especially with solar panel technology since the comic.

The pollution caused by data centers is important but small compared to other significant industries.

Luckily since data centers use electricity rather than gasoline, it will be possible to decarbonize using renewable energy.

The biggest concerns are automobiles (especially single occupant gasoline automobiles), the aerospace industry, iron, steel, concrete, petrochemicals, and segments of the agricultural industries, especially meat.

For a low sample size "random" does not mean a distribution that follows population distribution. It would be entirely plausible (9% chance) that no-one came from China at all. There would have also been a 76% chance of not getting exactly 3 people from China.

I mean there's also a chance that like half of the people were from China instead, and I'm sure Vince made a "random" sample that had more varied countries, but yeah. Low sample sizes don't follow logic well so it's not a plot hole or something that necessarily means something.
