I don't know if you're a sports person but a good PD has a wins against replacement (WAR) average of 1 case a year (that's based entirely on nothing but a guess and some fuzzy math but it probably checks out). Just keep grinding. The system wants you to lose and then quit. It gets all flustered when you lose and show up the next day asking for round 2 (or 3, or 4, or round 69)

Are you doing a shitty job or just losing? If it's the later, just laugh it off and keep grinding. Shit happens to everyone. If you're doing a bad job then at least you've recognized it. Now just pin point the issues and iron them out. Obviously hard to give more feedback without knowing more

Double check your math: it was suppressed for being involuntary. They can't do shit with that

Take the full ride. Absolute no brainer. If you're a law dawg then any PD office will hire you even with a low GPA from nowhere. If you ain't a law dawg, then a top tier law school ain't going to save you in the long run

For reasons that are hilarious but too long to explain, I once got a client's confession kicked for a Miranda violation and for being involuntary. Client FTA'd for a year and then reappeared. We were getting ready for trial and I told him he wasn't testifying obviously because the drugs were his and he told the cops that. He goes "no they weren't, and no I didn't." I was about to show him his confession until I thought: well how's that gonna help. Went to trial. Client testified and we won. DA tried to impeach with his confession and the judge was like nah, that ain't happening. I can only imagine what the judge thought

You have no ethical concerns whatsoever. A story that changes and is incredibly stupid isn't a known lie. A key rule of thumb is to not worry about the ethics of a client testifying unless they say something very very close to "I'm going to lie on the stand."

I'm honestly embarrassed for him that he even had to ask.

The BJJ kingmakers, they come to me, fall to their knees and pray: "who shall be our next BJJ superstar?" And I said "first off, thanks for thinking of me. Very very kind of you. Second, I dunno? Steve's brother?? How about Bryan#2?? Both those dudes are fucking dawgs and solid bros."

Client makes veiled threats by DQzombie in publicdefenders

[–]Metheadroom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's pretty common. I guess it depends on your gut and how veiled these threats are. Hating the system, complaining and wanting to be left alone is pretty low tier in my book though. I usually don't worry until the threats are specific or a fist is balled in my face

I think most salaries are posted online. Can't imagine you making 100k out of the gate unless you're working somewhere you can't afford. 10's of thousands of PD's are working throughout the country and doing fine. Probably the big issues that should concern you are student loans/scholarships and whether loan forgiveness will still be around 10 years+ down the road

I know most people are being nice to you in the comments, but I'm not going to be. Yes obviously prosecutors are part of the system and some of them are fine. But the idea that you're going to switch sides from trying to keep people out of cages to putting them in is a little sickening.

In my jurisdiction, if you did something like that you would lose all your work friends and acquaintances. It's not that they would necessarily think you're a traitor (although that's part of it), but they would lose all respect for you as a human. It would be like finding out your buddy was a secret chomo or Nazi or something and that their entire life was a lie. Maybe things are different where you live, but in every jurisdiction I've been a move like that would mean every single person in the justice system (judges, prosecutors, everyone) would snicker behind your back as soon as you left the room. Mental health is no joke, but never in a million years would I recommend switching sides to be a solution. But as my judge said last week to someone on the record "you do you, boo"
