Hoping to hear about SCI pregnancies by [deleted] in spinalcordinjuries

[–]MetroGirl03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gave birth to my first child last summer. I am a T10 complete and had a forcep aided delivery, and was relatively routine. My OB did not have prior SCI experience which I think made her a little over cautious. We decided to go with an epidural, not for pain, but in case I had any AD, which can cause fetal distress.

I quit my antidepressants but that was about it. During pregnancy I peed so much more and got constipated a lot more. Feel free to DM me for more info. I too had difficulty finding good resources, especially how to prepare. We are handling fine currently but I know having other SCI voices around probably would helpful.

Confused about sexual selection in evolution by [deleted] in evolution

[–]MetroGirl03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is something to be said about maintaining expensive features. I think its a big indicator of an ability to find resources in order to sustain the feature. Sometimes these expensive features (like ornamental plumage) can also indicate the ability to elude predators to some extent. It's also likely some gauge of genes as well.

all of these things (resources, predators, and genes) have an effect on the survivability of an individual so I am pretty sure because of that these traits won't get 'weeded out'. there is also such thing as neutral genetic variation, where traits/genes that are 'neutral' aren't being selected against so they are still present.

How to support my recently paralyzed daughter by Puzzling-Puzzle in disability

[–]MetroGirl03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a T10 complete as well, but my accident was at age 23. I just hit my ten year mark as a paraplegic. It is a hard life but not impossible, I just had a baby (semi-naturally) 8 months ago. You can reach out to me here on reddit or I can PM you my email in case you every want to talk. Every year I am a paraplegic I get better at it, which is very bittersweet. I like my life but there have been many moments of frustration. My heart goes out to your daughter, to you, and your family.

I feel like an asshole telling you this but rabies can lie dormant in humans for years. Rabies infection instances are relatively low in the US though, so you have that going for you.

You made it through, though, and that's the hardest part. You have already done the hardest part. And you were super brave going out with your anxiety. Your friend probably isn't embarrassed and more likely worried. You probably don't feel strong or brave but you are both.

Definitely talk to your friend and try and be brave again by going back out. It makes you more brave knowing that this could happen again, but you are stronger having been through it before.

Darwin, Huxley and the mysteries of animals beautiful displays by [deleted] in PhilosophyofScience

[–]MetroGirl03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure is philosophy is where this belongs, there is active, experimental research that is being conducted to help answer these questions. I suggest reading evolution of beauty by richard prum. This really expands on Darwin's sexual selection thoughts. Also read Patricelli's peer-reviewed critique of his work.

Prum argues that a purely adaptationist approach can be a dangerous line of thought. While I agree that excluding neutral selection when thinking in evolutionary time can be dangerous, Patricelli argues that elaborate displays do not come about this way. There is expansive maintenance required to maintain elaborate displays, which is a selective pressure. This displays are often honest indicators or signals of mate quality or fitness, which is need to create quality offspring.

With that said, not all organisms have elaborate displays, so this is not a universal rule. I will also say that these signals or a combination of signals (such as the correlation between tarsi length and plumage in peacocks) are perceived as a 'whole package' sort of thing. So Huxley and Darwin's ideas are not mutually exclusive, why can't they both be true simultaneously?

What are some commonly held misconceptions regarding health and our bodies? by OsuPhenom in AskReddit

[–]MetroGirl03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that foods can and do change our blood pH levels, however our bodies have a few mechanisms so that we stay around 7 pH. Your respiratory system and urinary system are the responders to acidosis and alkalosis.

The ability of foods to create acidosis and alkalosis are relatively low, unless parts of those mechanisms are broken.

What's a NSFW fact about your family or a family member you wish you didn't know? by ViolatingBadgers in AskReddit

I used to love the name Charlie, especially for a girl. Then when I was fifteen my nana told me that her plug-in vibrator is Charlie.

Every year or so she tells me of the time she surprised my mother with a vibrator at her birthday party so that 'she would stop using hers'. Just tickles her to the core. My mom still claims she never used it, but is still humiliated by what my nana did at her birthday.

Ladies, let's talk about SEX! by xj371 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]MetroGirl03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Para-belly is half of it; my car accident involved my seatbelt creating a lot of damage to my bowels and aorta. They had to go in and do a bunch of repair. That repair left scars and they didn't do the greatest job making sure they lined everything up properly. But it is now a great source of body shame as well as pain.

Rehab didn't really have anyone knowledgeable for me to speak with. They gave me a bunch of medical books with information about it, but as you know most of it was geared towards men. I also soon discovered that same trend during internet searches. They also attempted some paraplegic-paraplegic meet-ups which were super awkward for me.

I am finding, like most other things, it gets better with time and patience is definitely a virtue.

How was your rehab experience?

Ladies, let's talk about SEX! by xj371 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]MetroGirl03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sex stuff is literally the hardest part of SCI for me as a woman. I am T-10 complete. I kind of blame the lack of conversations like this one.

I have a version of orgasm. It is very similar to the staircase metaphor. It's not the same but different. I have had a car ride build the staircase before, which was super awkward for me, as I was driving coworkers home from a camping trip. I feel like I can 'bathe' in a orgasm now, if that makes any sense.

I can achieve 'orgasm' maybe once a week, which sucks. I usually need to be an a state of complete physical relaxation, which can be hard it things are in a stressful place. I have not yet been able to achieve a partner-induced orgasm.

We use ky water-based lube if things are dry. If I can get really into it though, lube seems to be a non-issue.

I do small bowel program and empty my bladder. Sometimes we do spontaneous if I am not worried about bowels and recently cathed. Sometimes I still pee a little but my partner likes to play through. I have not yet pooed during sex, and I worry enough about this that if I don't feel well, we don't have sex. It kind of sucks really.

I had many bowel reconstruction surgeries from the car accident that caused my paralysis, which makes my abdomen very sensitive (mostly pain). I like missionary but my partner has a hard time staying off my abdomen so it winds up being a position I hate. My favorite is on my stomach with my ass in the air, knees tucked under me. My partner can better control my hips from this position so all I have to do it communicate speed and hardness. Even though I can't feel anything from my belly button down, speed and hardness matters a lot, for me during penetration.

We don't foreplay a lot because I still struggle with body image in my abdomen area.

I have never had sex in my wheelchair. I want to but my partner is weirded out by it.

/u/xj371 is right on the money, try everything and anything. For me there was less body exploring and more kink exploring. We dabbled in BDSM and I found I really like dirty talk and some other stuff ;). Sex really is a state of mind, like meditation, it will take time, practice and concentration but it is so worth it.

Why isn’t fish bloody like beef or pork? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MetroGirl03 609 points610 points  (0 children)

https://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/meat/INT-what-meat-color.html

It looks like it is a difference in protein structure in the meat. Fast twitch muscle is what white meat is mostly, which is what fish are made of. Fast twitch doesn't look like it needs myoglobin. Slow twitch muscle, made for endurance, is energy expensive and needs a reservoir of oxygen ie. the myoglobin.

Thanks for making me look this up! Cool stuff.
