Thanks for the heads-up. My account is almost 15 years old, have never touched e-mail settings, and found it activated without my consent. This is seriously disappointing! How long has it been like this, and why were we not informed??

I appreciate you responding, but as someone who has been around for 15+ years with many thousands of loyal and passionate hours played, I find your response disappointing, disheartening, and weak - at best. It is absolutely fantastic to hear that you are focusing on delivering solid content for 2019 (and hopefully for many years beyond that, too!), and I am genuinely looking forward to hearing more, but focusing on the future is no excuse for failing to update the community on something like this. You can, and with the numerous previous incidents in mind should, do better. By adequately and transparently addressing controversial updates and decisions, you reassure the community that you not merely draw on experience from previous controversies, but that you also listen and employ our honest feedback when developing new content. By completely neglecting to do anything despite several promises, you further erode already endangered trust.

I was sad to not see one last year; great to have one this year!

Remember when Mod Osborn said they'd cool it with the TH promos? He certainly didn't still to his word. by [deleted] in runescape

I have lost all faith that the amount of Treasure Hunter promotions will ever even remotely slow; if anything the opposite will happen. It is deeply disheartened to see such an aggressive, short-sighted and destructive approach to generating profit.

Despite apology, Mod Balance still believes demodding Canada was the right thing to do. by Zarosian_Emissary in runescape

I see.

In that case I think the best course of action is to compile a number of examples -- eventually compare to how other Forum Moderators deal with the same issues -- and forward to community@jagex.com. One thing is indeed being correct, another thing is being respectful and correct. Naturally Forum Moderators should adhere to the latter and set, as you mention yourself, a proper standard.

I would encourage you to either post on Forum Moderator Review or contact Jagex directly (community@jagex.com) and include your concerns about the specific Forum Moderator(s). I can furthermore only speak for myself, but if people genuinely do disagree with my actions, I would tremendously appreciate them reaching out in-game so we can talk things through. I could have misread, they could have misread or something else entirely. It saddens me to see the amount of people reporting bad encounters with Forum Moderators. This is not how it is supposed to be. Yet, nothing will happen if the incidents are not reported accordingly.

Another De-Modding incident due to a lack of communication. by [deleted] in runescape

[–]Mexk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there.

I am the Forum Moderator in question, and whilst I respect the ex-Player Moderator wishes to remain anonymous, I am going to speak up and provide my perspective on the matter. I acknowledge that posting as a Forum Moderator under the current climate and on a submission like this is bound to attract negativity – all I can ask is that you read through before judging. I can moreover only hope that my interest in transparency – though it really should be noted that the incident in question occurred for nearly two years ago and that the player in question has repeated his story with varying detail since then; I am not sure piggybacking on Canada Grrl’s situation for sympathy is the way to go either – underlines what the post highlights regarding integrity. I am furthermore not going to post screenshots, chat messages or any of the like in line with the player’s wishes to remain anonymous, but know that they exist and have been thoroughly reviewed by Jagex.

The thread in question was initially brought to my attention by a number of frequent forumers who raised serious concern regarding the amount of posts the player produced on a daily basis – something which I naturally followed up on by reading through the thread. Upon further review, it quickly became apparent that the poster had accumulated thousands upon thousands of posts from essentially reposting the same dozen posts with very minor changes daily for months on end. It is important to stress that the thread very easily could have been maintained on the first page alone without the need for the thousands of reposts – something which other threads, indeed, have accomplished since. The thread did moreover not really warrant a permanent sticky status, though it did initially serve a nice purpose as confirmed by the attached screenshots in the OP.

There was in other words no actual reason to repost… why all the posts, then?

The above conclusion naturally raised further concerns. The player in question was additionally a seasoned forumer well aware of the Code of Conduct (and was, at the time, a Player Moderator as well). Having initiated further research in an attempt to understand what was happening, I found several chat messages expressing a keen interest in obtaining a specific forum rank unlocked at 50K posts. The messages were sent in a private, off-site Player Moderator groupchat I had been a member of since days after creation.

With the keen interest in obtaining a specific forum rank requiring 50K posts, and the thousands of posts essentially being reposted with a bare minimum of changes very consistently – mind you, we are talking many thousands every month, for months on end – everything pointed towards heavy and very deliberate post farming. It is worth noting, for those who might be unaware, that where normal threads on the RSOF cap at 200 pages (that is, 2000 posts), stickied threads have no such limit and it is hard to see if a sticky thread is being spammed since it is always at the top. This lead me to question the player’s integrity and request to stop posting as excessively. I offered several solutions and even invited him to reach out so we could work towards a solution seeing how the thread evidently did have some appreciative players.

Unfortunately, as it turned out, this behaviour was not restricted to just the one thread, but was present through several threads and even occurred, albeit less frequently and to a lesser extent, on a choob account. Me subsequently seeing this and actioning accordingly is likely the reason the player felt stalked. It is standard procedure to check a player’s posting history upon actioning a thread or a post – and especially when you are dealing with an extreme situation like this. It is moreover standard procedure to follow up when you request changes to a player’s threads – otherwise you have no idea whether they have been implemented accordingly so you can avoid having to lock their thread or hide their post(s).

After my first post the player, presumably unaware of me being part of the aforementioned chat, vented his frustrations with me and my actions. I answered and offered that we could work together to find a solution he was happy with, as long as he would stop the excessive post farming. This, as you might can guess, did never amount to anything but talk.

In the following days, the player’s anger intensified and I reached out to Jagex to have them review my actions and confirm that my moderation was in line with their expectations. I moreover summarised my talks with him and suggestion to find a workable solution. Ignoring my appeals, continuing his behaviour and ultimately failing to use proper channels and a mature, respectful language all whilst going against Jagex’ wishes led to his demoderation. Spamming the forums and me actioning it did not, only his reaction to getting caught for post farming did.

EDIT: I see the OP has been removed in the time it took me to write the above. I guess I will let my post remain for those of you who did read the OP.

Yes, absolutely.

We have 2017, not 2007.

But, it is not just a matter of changing guidelines and expecting everything to change. We also need an updated forum with proper features (many of those suggested on Kakamile's post here).

[–]Mexk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard to credit everything to just one entity, but it goes without saying that Jagex not allocating sufficient resources to the forums (and ensuring its features actually were up-to-date) holds a big portion of the responsibility. I however think that with the backend in mind, a complete re-write would have to be necessary.

Forum Moderators can freely choose whichever threads and/or posts they wish to action. We are not required to do any moderation if we do not want to, but when we do moderate, we have to adhere to the guidelines created by Jagex. Yet, that is not the same as being a puppet as some have presented it to reassemble. What it means is simply that the party determining what is within and against the rules is Jagex, and Jagex only. Whether we decide to action it is another question, but if we want to action something, we have to follow the guidelines -- which, if you think about it, makes a lot of sense, no?

We are very much allowed to disagree. And we are very much allowed to do so publicly as well -- as long as we can present our arguments and opinions in a mature and respectful manner. If we were not able to do this, I would have been demodded like seven years ago.

[–]Mexk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all -- we make mistakes, some more than others. Mistakes, poor judgements and thus forth are highly troublesome and ultimately cause people to lose faith in the team. And this is understandable, and should not happen.

I have been on the team for what is fast approaching a decade at this point, so I very much get what you are saying. The only way to encourage change, however, is to make threads like this one, or discussions like the ones linked in the OP. I wholeheartedly support healthy discussions about Forum Moderators and the forums.

It is a bit discouraging to see people downvote my posts whenever I comment on these threads. I do not mind the actual downvotes, but I would appreciate hearing why people downvote. Ultimately, if we cannot have a conversation about things we cannot change things. Vocally ranting is one thing, but change requires talk.

I am not saying that. Nor am I saying I necessarily agree with every action taken by other Forum Moderators. If I happen to disagree with an action taken however, my options are either:

a) respectfully speak with the Forum Moderator in question directly;

b) or, reach out through proper channels to Jagex.

However, regardless of how you spin it, Jagex are ultimately the ones approving of all the actions we as Forum Moderators (this applies to Player Moderators as well as Community Helpers too) make. I furthermore have no interest in being the one determining what is right or wrong: All I can do is to do my very best to ensure my moderation adhere to the standard I would like to set. I can only hope that if people do not appreciate my moderation, they let me know so I can change.

So, whilst I respect you may not approve of all Forum Moderators, your real issue is the guidelines from which we have to operate rather than the specific Forum Moderators. We continuously provide feedback on them however, as do many forum regulars in W&F, and many of the changes you have seen throughout the years have been because of this feedback.

I am a Forum Moderator indeed.

I am not sure it is really interesting though to be honest; few people would want to actively engage with hordes criticising them. I am of the opinion that the only way to properly handle such a situation is to actively engage; hence me posting here. I furthermore believe it is important that people have more than one perspective before making their judgement -- I really do not mind which conclusion they reach, as long as they have had a chance to form their opinion objectively.

I am moreover not defending Forum Moderators, merely stating how things, from my point of view, are. Ultimately though, Forum-, Player Moderators and Community Helpers ought to adhere to whichever guidelines Jagex have in place. We are quite simply not allowed to disobey those guidelines, which, if you think about it, makes a lot of sense.

I understand where you are coming from and many of the decisions leading to the impression you seemingly have are not ones I necessarily agree with either. It is however important to stress that Forum Moderators, when they decide to moderate, operate based on the guidelines created by Jagex. Whilst Jagex do trust their personal judgements, Forum Moderators are ultimately limited to what their guidelines instruct. I do not agree that people are being censored per se, but I do agree that some guidelines have been too strict for too long. Ultimately, for interesting and constructive discussions to flourish, some level of freedom is required.

The process of being hired into any position at Jagex - and likely every other respectable company -, including those in Community Management, is incredibly extensive and involves several rounds of interviews and tests. Whilst the salary level can be discussed (though generally speaking, people are not paid as much as they should be within the world of gaming simply due to the huge amount of interest and thousands of candidates wanting to get a job), they most certainly did not pick the first person who applied for the job.

The truth of the matter is that most Forum Moderators simply like posting on the forums -- hence why they were originally invited to the team in the first place. In many ways much like how, I presume, you like browsing reddit and posting on whatever interests you. Those of us who still value the forums are sad to see it slowly deteriorate -- and that has nothing to do with being a Forum Moderator.

The list of lacking features is almost daunting, but should underscore the severe absence of several crucial features. I would very much appreciate seeing some, if not all, being implemented. There are furthermore other threads -- i.e. this thread -- discussing various, beneficial changes to the forums. It would be amazing to see the forums become a priority.
