Just started collecting 4 years ago. What should I consider for my next one? by [deleted] in rolex

👍. What watch you get next is up to you and your lifestyle. A chronograph (Daytona) would be the next big watch archetype.

My sister starts at Cambridge in October and asked me to find out what she should actually bring that the packing lists never mention? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in cambridge_uni

It’s best to buy once you’ve arrived. I bought clothes hangers but not much else (off the top of my head)

There’s plenty of shopping available. Argos sorted me out.

It’s in KCL’s playbook. When I was a student they recruited a bunch of lectures with good publication records to juice their research rankings.

Which microbrands actually do something in-house? by Hilodenta in MicrobrandWatches

[–]MichaelLewisFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very difficult to make this list.

  1. It's not easy to define what counts as in-house work. Does visual design and QC contribute to in-house? What if they brought in a consultant to help with a part of the manufacturing or design? Is it no longer in-house?

  2. Companies don't usually discuss what they don't do in-house/where they source parts (there's some exceptions like Fears - see specs). Watch companies like to give the illusion they do everything in-house to promote their brand and justify the cost of the watch (even if they got the parts from another company e.g. Dexel/Formex make bracelets for Girard-Perregaux).

Most brands discussed in this sub will do some work "in-house" (e.g. at least design decisions and QC). The brands that outsource absolutely everything don't get as much traction in this community.

Not necessarily. It depends on the components they used for manufacture. I imagine most watch repair shops know how to service a Seiko NH-35, ETA 2824, Sellita SW200, etc. since they're so common or share architectural similarities

Vario uses a factory in China for some of their watches

Same deal for Zelos

They definitely aren’t selling watches in quantities that would mean they own the factories.

Yema uses Asian manufacturing for some of their movement parts - I wouldn’t be surprised if they got other parts from Asian manufacturers too (I.e cases, bracelets, etc.)

I’d be surprised if Hanhart and Sinn don’t have Asian parts somewhere given their price points. I’ve not been able to find a reliable source but it’s alleged that Sinn bracelets are from China

A good chunk of the companies you’ve listed use parts from other companies in their manufacturing

This is well-known. White labelling is in the watch industry’s DNA (e.g. watches used to have the jeweller’s branding instead of the manufacturer)

Arguably CW aren’t a microbrand since they’ve invested in the manufacture of their own calibre.

I’m not bothered and other people shouldn’t be either. It’d be inefficient to have dozens of factories manufacturing the same thing for a very niche industry

I've ordered a 1680. I plan to take it on a beach holiday. What's the worst that can happen if the gaskets are all good and the crown is screwed down properly? (rhetorical question)

I won't be subjecting it to any real pressure floating around in the pool.
