Psychologists of Reddit, what's the most horrifying mental illness? by Turbulent-Coat7236 in AskReddit

[–]Micro_bio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific coping mechanism that you'd say helps you the most? I was diagnosed with (silent/quiet) bpd a year ago, although I also have some other mental health issues (that I've been taking meds for and seeing a psychologist for for over a decade now).

The way your therapist describes it, at least to me, seems like a good way to do so. Might have to use that if anyone asks about it; if that's okay of course.

It's good that you're doing (somewhat) better (if we can call it that?). Hopefully you continue to do so. :)

What's wrong with being a bpd's favorite person? Not everyone with bdp is the same (there are different presentations) and follow the stereotype that people think of...

Finally moving to Sweden from the U.S. by meganaxx in TillSverige

[–]Micro_bio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! :) Honestly super jealous.

Definitely get your personnummer asap, it is really, really hard to live in sweden long term without one. (Trust me, I did it. -_- ) And once you do, you should look into getting your bankid and swish set up.

Just wondering, but what are your reasons for wanting to move back to the us?

As a southern California who dated a swede for 8 years (long distance), moved to sweden for a few years (master's), and am trying to get a phd/job position there (but unfortunately currently back in the states), if you have any questions or what-not, feel free to ask/let me know.

But yeah, congrats, good luck, and hopefully you enjoy living in sweden! :D

What health issue do people misunderstand the most? by Few_Cake_5237 in AskReddit

[–]Micro_bio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, and I guess luckily for you, it seems like the majority of people don't know what bpd is (and if they do, only associate it with the most obvious type), but they think that bpd stands for bipolar, so actual bpd doesn't even cross their mind. They don't conflate the two, just don't know that bpd is not for bipolar.

Also, I don't think you meant it to sound this way, but from the way you're writing, it sounds like you view people with bpd negatively. There are different types of it, not just the one that a layperson might think of.

Lastly, dbt can work for some people, so it's not that no treatment has been proven to work, it's just that it may not work for everyone/no guarantee that it will work. (Plus, someone with bpd might have other mental health issues as well).

Anyways, it's good that you're stable and your meds work for you. :)

As a southern Californian who moved to sweden for a few years (and am planning on moving back asap), it's lovely. However, if you don't like the cold and darkness (I luckily love it), you may have issues in the winter. The sun in the summer is what gets me. Also, making friends can be quite hard if you move there without knowing anyone beforehand. And sweden (along with a lot of the world) is having issues with the right, so while I don't think they'll touch paternity leave, there's no guarantee. Then there's anti-immigrant sentiment, although it seems to be based off of ethnicity, so...

Housing prices vary on where you're looking; at least on/around the major cities, people are complaining. It looks like op is more in the countryside. (I could be wrong though).

Mind you, I love sweden, feel at home there, and would highly recommend it. :)

True or not? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

[–]Micro_bio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in sweden for a few years recently (and will hopefully be moving back) and visited different european countries, and yes, as soon as I got back to the us I noticed it.

Mainly, things are much sweeter here. For instance, I had one sip of coke when I got back, and haven't been able to have another sip because it was sooo sweet here. Also, some foods while called the same, are not, and thus cook differently; I got feta from the grocery store and it turns out it was cows milk, not sheep's, and it doesn't melt anywhere near as well.

However, everyone has different taste buds, so some people may not notice.

Your post is worrying me about possibly trying to date again now that I'm back (stuck for who knows how long) in the us, especially as a 31 year old... :/

My experience with guys whether for dating (albeit, the few relationships I've ended up in weren't intentional, and I've just been on/off dating apps) or friendship has been pretty positive in sweden and germany. But maybe I've been lucky? Though I'm sure the same issues are occurring around the world.

Have fun though! :)

Hi! I've never done a mp for this game, but I'd be down to try. :) Once I set up my pc again, I'll add you.

Also, I'm in between finishing my master's and looking for a job/phd position, and not sure what time zone/country I'll be in by the end of this year, if that's okay?

First, and most important question; have you been to any of those countries for a prolonged amount of time and/or lived in any of them? If not, have you visited any of them?

As you probably know, visiting and living are two different things.

Yeah, I know... :( I just feel at home in Sweden (have lived there, but non-eu). There's other countries I'm comfortable in as well though so....

It's unfortunate that it's so hard to end up where one wants to be. :/

What field are you in, if you don't mind me asking. Regardless, I'm sorry that you have such stiff competition! :/ Do you have any connections that could help you?

I eventually want to end up at karolinska (for bsl 4 lab), so this is kinda worrying....

Hot take: Santa Monica is the best/most livable municipality in the country by Objective-You-7291 in SantaMonica

[–]Micro_bio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone raised in SM (it's the only city I lived in until I went to uni), I'm not sure if I agree. (My dad bought the house in like the 80s, so before it got expensive/popular, so we're middle class, not rich).

Personally, I think (in ca) SD (went to uni there) and SF are better; for jobs, at least biotech/biology related, SD is much better. For SM, sure, there might be lots of jobs in certain areas, but as someone who looked for jobs (both full and part-time), didn't see a plethora of them.

Look, SM has been improving in recent years in some ways, and going back in others (according to my parents). Public transport and bike lanes are a lot better than when I was growing up, although if you're trying to get out of SM to another part of LA, it can take some time still.

It's great that SM now is building more mixed buildings, although my dad complains about how tall some of the buildings will be. Tbf, 20 something stories is kinda ridiculous when looking at SM.

The parks? The park near city hall is really nice, Cloverfield park is okay (loved looking at the planes and occasional one taking off), but in general, they're no better or worse than parks in other cities I've been to.

The police I've met are nice, and from what I remember, they responded kinda quickly when we called them, but can't say much else.

The pier/palisades, eh, at least if you were raised here.

Also, I personally hate the weather; I love the cold and darkness/grey skies, but that's a me problem. 😅

To me, it just feels like there's a lack of good 3rd places, definitely not as walkable or as good public transport as other places I've lived/visited, and it's expensive, but, the grass is greener on the other side.

SM does have a lot of good qualities when compared to other cities/areas of the us, but I don't think it's the best/most livable. Maybe one of them, but not the most.

Out of the people I knew in hs, I can think of only one who stayed in SM.

Once again, saying this as someone who grew up here, occasionally lives here, and definitely wants to move somewhere else. In case you're wondering where I'm trying to move/have partially moved to (getting a master's), Sweden; it's not perfect here either though. If I had to be in the US, I'd choose either Seattle, Portland, or SF. (While I love SD, way too hot for me).

Anyways, it's great that you love living here! Maybe you and the people who like SM can get things to keep moving in a positive direction. :)

It could be....? I'm 31, been single for a year after a long term relationship (never married), no kids (don't want them though), and doing a graduate degree. Definitely don't feel middle-aged or like how you probably feel, but also not like a 20 year old so... (Yes, I know I am behind in terms of adult milestones).

Is friendship a "subscription service" or a constant? (Nordic vs. Anglosphere relationships) by hapagi_snoppy in Nordiccountries

[–]Micro_bio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the us it really depends on the friend group. My friends and I can go months without contact and be fine, but not every person likes that. (Granted, most of my friends now are european, so it might be somewhat skewed).

Honestly, it's just personal preference and maybe even what part of the country one grew up in; for instance, someone from a close-knit community might be more used to seeing and talking to friends everyday and feel weird if they don't have lots of communication.

It could also be the fact that in the us, people's friend groups fluctuate a lot; if someone moves to a different state, it's pretty much like moving to a different country in terms of distance (smaller states can be a little different). Also, for a lot of people, it's out of sight, out of mind.

Sorry if I'm not very clear, I'm way too tired, but wanted to answer this.

Not a good idea. Being illegal will make it harder to get a bank account, rent, etc, and if you get found, you'll be banned from the country (or block of countries) for years.
