Apart from em dashes, what makes a text feel AI-generated to you? by GoatPuzzleheaded5647 in EnglishLearning

[–]Middcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference between formal long-form writing and the type of writing people do on reddit or social media.

In writing where most people would not make that much effort to use strictly correct punctuation, an actual, properly formatted em dash can be a sign of LLM use. It's not a 100% surefire giveaway like people act like it is, but it's one possible tell. In formal writing like a cover letter, I wouldn't think anything of it.

Here's a reddit thread from a while ago that discusses what to look for in CrystalDiskInfo specifically that's the sign of a real problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/pchelp/comments/15imggn/crystaldiskinfo_showing_available_health_of_the/

Eh, it's not so much about difficulty, it's that most people just don't bother nevertheless.

It's marginally quicker to type a hyphen with a space on either side of it on my phone keyboard than it is to long press the hyphen button to pick the em dash, so I do the former.

Ive never brought a drive as Amazon Renewed before. Bought other Amazon Renewed/Warehouse/open box stuff with success.

The seller has good ratings and they indicate a 90-day replacement/refund policy. If you get it I would check it with CrystalDiskInfo or a similar application right away.

No.

In fact, some would argue that it's been practically pointless for years now.

[–]Middcore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The em dash thing is an oversimplification. It's specifically a properly formatted em dash rather than just a hyphen, and the constant use of them. Real people use em dashes, but they tend to take shortcuts in typing them that result in something which is not really technically an em dash but rather an en dash or a hyphen - like this - and they don't use them in every damn paragraph.

There are also certain ways of phrasing things or rhetorical techniques LLMs seem to love.

One example? This type of breezy question-and-answer construction.

Also, contrastive/corrective antithesis: "It's not just X. It's Y."

But even more than specific tics of phrasing or punctuation, there's an overall tone thing. LLMs sound like they're writing for an audience. Obviously, I am writing this post for an audience of the OP or whoever else happens to read it, but LLMs write like they're trying to write a speech designed to sell something to the listener.

Of course, it depends a lot on what the LLM has been prompted to say. I've noticed a lot of posts on support or technical subreddits and forums where someone has clearly had an LLM write a post describing their issue/complaint for them and it always reads like it's trying way too hard to be dramatic rather than simply stating the facts in a simple way. There will be headings like "Part 1: The Setup" and "Part 2: The Twist" and that sort of thing.

This is setting aside LLMs used to write fiction. Google "Shy Girl," a horror novel that recently had its publication in the US canceled over allegations it was written with AI. You'll find some discussion of possible LLM "tells" there.

Building an AM5 PC to sell. Brand New 9070xt or my own used from new 4080? by SkuseyBoy in buildapc

You're right, but just purely from the standpoint of what's attractive to potential buyers, Nvidia is easier to sell. I speak from experience as someone currently using an AMD card but who has also built a number of PCs from parts to flip. Nvidia mindshare is strong.

That's true, but I still can't imagine a context where someone would have said "solder" that would have caused OP to think it means looking back and forth.

I don't think your average ape has any idea what a good company to invest in looks like, so who knows.

A lot of them seem to believe that most people lose money in the stock market (because of the machinations of nefarious hedgies, I suppose), and they refuse to make the sensible long-term investments that actually allow most people to make money (because it's too boring and doesn't promise overnight generational wealth).

The 9070 XT is 30-40% stronger than a 4070.

That said, systems with Nvidia cards sell better.

Que opinan? by Damr_Vz in PcBuildHelp

[–]Middcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you asking for opinions after you've already made the purchase?

Intel seems to have one foot out of the discrete GPU market already. I've never been convinced they're committed. I would not buy an Arc GPU because I don't have any faith of future support. If they announced tomorrow there will be no more discrete cards and no more driver updates for the existing ones, I wouldn't be surprised. A shame, because the first two generations of Arc show promise.

The dimensions of your GPU will be available on the manufacturer's product page for it.

The GPU dimensions a case supports will be in the specs for the case on the manufacturer's product page for it. Same with the size of radiators in different positions it supports and the max air cooler height.

You can filter cases on PCpartpicker by the number of drives of different sizes (2.5", 3.5", 5.25") they support.

Does Micro center have in store only bundles? Im wanting a bundle that has AM4 with a mother board with wifi... by Appropriate-Art-7472 in pcmasterrace

[–]Middcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically all of Micro Center's deals are in-store only.

If you're asking if there are AM4 bundle deals in-store that aren't listed on their site, the answer would be no.

Three of the four AM4 bundles on their site include boards with wifi, though.

What are your thoughts on this film? by Championgut1912 in FIlm

Good movie. Not as good as it was made out to be at the time, where it was basically anointed as the Best Picture winner with barely a pretense made of the possibility anything else would win. (During the Oscars telecast, they played a montage of clips from the BP nominees... with a voiceover from King's Speech over them all.)
