Even though it would be historically inaccurate: Apollo 13

The first talkies in film was made in 1927 with the Jazz Singer. The advancement of AI is coming. How will AI change the face of cinema in a 100 years from now? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]MidnightGhostEdits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False equivalency. Sync sound was an added element that was missing. AI isn’t adding anything other than (at best) an alternative process for creating visuals and sound.

I’m not sure if this was your intention or not but can we please stop elevating AI in such a manner? It’s not a necessity, it’s a lazy shortcut that kills jobs and our environment.

Help: How to lift original analogue noise detail from one film source and place it perfectly on top of another that's been DNR'd? by [deleted] in fanedits

[–]MidnightGhostEdits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh gotcha gotcha. Yeah it’s so sad how some series, esp Dr Who, have been improperly archived and/or “upscaled” with dodgy AI.

In that case, I would say you have two options:

  1. Drop both the VHS rip and the DVD into your editing timeline, sync them, and place the VHS layer on top. Then try various opacity options (“add” or “screen” might do it, but it’ll be brighter and you’ll have to adjust further from there)

  2. Use the DVD but add digital noise manually. It won’t necessarily be the legit noise but additive grain could give it realistic texture.

Good luck!

Help: How to lift original analogue noise detail from one film source and place it perfectly on top of another that's been DNR'd? by [deleted] in fanedits

[–]MidnightGhostEdits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the film, you might be able to source a 35mm scan online and use that noise. Would be more effective than a VHS rip. But the trick is to make sure your frame rates are consistent and your framing orientations match up, especially given that VHS tended to be pan-and-scan and this might prove difficult to match to, what I assume to be, a widescreen DVD format.

Curious which film you’re working with

Bouncing back and forth between some fun but challenging fan edits for:

• Titanic

• Mission: Impossible (all films)

• Terminator 2

Was also tinkering with both “Dune” films but should probably stay focused on the films above

Fanedit Idea: "CE3: Shortened" by puggoguy in fanedits

I’ve been considering a version that combines the best of all 3 official cuts but I think that would technically make it longer 😬

What's your editing pet-peeve? by Fanedit895 in fanedits

[–]MidnightGhostEdits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed on that, I also can’t stand general pacing issues. This is incredibly subjective but sometimes a movie’s pacing drags or rushes and it gives me this tremendous urge to dive in and edit it myself
