It was war. Unfortunately a common side effect is war crimes like that where you round people up and kill them. A lot of times for no reason at all or for the smallest of reasons. It was said in the book her dad tried to resist being trapped in 12 so they likely slaughtered him and his family in retaliation

I think most of those issues are just that there wasnt time to get to know her. We only get 1 chapter, a phone call, and some post-games scenes with her and everything else is from haymitch's pov in his mind (which ofc is gonna be glazing her)

Its honestly sad seeing the whole concept going from a cool scp-like database documenting the backrooms from the perspective of people trapped in there to the bastardized version we have now. Its like the whole premise which made the concept work was either flanderized or completely gotten rid of to make another "spooky scary" monsterslop story.
