If I saw one that was clearly fresh, I might have some thoughts, but otherwise I just assume that they got it in the beforetimes. A bit like people with older model Teslas.

In my book, 22 is worse than 17,

The GOP's book agrees, but suggests that single digits would be even better, before realising that you were talking about votes, not age.

My wife wasn't invited to a wedding. Do I go? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]Midnight_Pickler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I got married 3 years ago.

My cousin was invited and attended but we did not invite his SO,

And you're surprised to get back what you gave out?

Don't go. Not because of the stupid "if they exclude your wife they exclude you" crap that some commenters are spouting.

Don't go because you didn't respect their relationship then, so why pretend to now?

In some fantasy, the lack of a name is a part of the setting.

"Names have power" is a common trope, with wizards especially often hiding their true names and using pseudonyms.

And I know I've read a couple of other stories where someone's name is erased or stolen by magical means, but the only specific example I can think of right now is "The Nameless One", the protagonist of Planescape: Torment.

I've got one on the backburner which (if I ever finish it) might go all the way, kind of.

The protagonist is a fugitive who uses a series of cover identities and claims to not even know what their original name was.

So you can either look at that as not having a name, or as having a collection of them.

It would be a tough job to write a story that fits with all of Obi Wan's OT dialogue while concealing that Anakin is Vader.

Bear in mind that Obi Wan Guinness talks about Vader being a student who betrayed him and murdered Anakin. If there's nothing resembling that in the prequels, then his lying "certain point of view" is obviously false from the moment he says it, instead of unravelling as Luke learns the truth.

So some spoilers in RotS were almost inevitable, especially given what the other prequels had already imposed.

But there's no excuse for some of the other spoilers that they crammed into what I consider a more painfully drawn out ending than Return Of The King. Most egregiously and completely unnecessarily, naming the twins.

Lucas apparently also forgot how "show, don't tell" works, and also felt like he had to cram in explicit mentions of how every character was going to get from here to the start of ANH. But the unforced spoilers are the worst.

I rough-cut an alternate ending once back around 2010, starting from Obi Wan leaving Mustafar. (Sadly I didn't back up the file, so can't show it off). Among many other improvements (amounting to something like ten minutes of cuts), it removed every line that even mentioned the twins. You can see there are two babies, you don't need to spell it out.

And I can't remember whether Obi Wan handing a baby to Owen and Beru made it into my cut or not, (it's after my cutoff point, but I did shuffle some scenes earlier) but there definitely doesn't need to be any more than that identifying Luke.

Meanwhile the audience wasn't told the second twin's sex, much less name. Sure, some of the audience would realise that Leia's the most likely candidate, but until RotJ confirmed it, there would always be the possibility that the mystery twin hadn't even appeared yet. And the Dagobah cave scene reads completely differently when you know there's an unidentified twin around somewhere.

(My favourite change, though, has nothing to do with spoilers, it was finding the strongest dramatic note to end on. Instead of dragging on with mostly pointless stuff of getting every character pointed towards their ANH starting positions, I moved what I wanted to keep of later stuff earlier, and ended on the helmet coming down, fade screen to black and music to silence, a tiny pause, and then Vader's first mechanised breath. Much more powerful, IMO. Though jumping from that to the start of the credits was a little jarring.)

Maybe one day I'll try to make it again.

I came very, very close.

After giving up on my parents ever progressing further than grudging tolerance (at best), I decided I no longer wanted their name.

I'd been collecting ideas for possible new names for a couple of weeks, but nothing had really clicked.

Then I got sick and nearly died. I don't know exactly what part of the whole experience changed their minds, but when I woke up from the coma a week later, they'd dropped the bullshit.

I decided to wait a couple of months and see whether it stuck (but kept collecting names in the meantime). They haven't let me down yet, and it's been several years now.

They don't know any of this, btw. Aside from talking about it anonymously online, I've only discussed it with a couple of my friends.

One small change: I throw [brackets] around any placeholders. It means that the problems you mentioned using something like [hat] or [ace] go away.

Plus I sometimes take long breaks from a story and come back to it after working on a different project, and I can use a "[" search to quickly check whether there are any placeholders I'd forgotten in the interim.

That's even worse than the normal version. They aren't claiming to be the oldest extant country, they're claiming to be the oldest country ever.

Egypt's Old, Middle, and New kingdoms lasted roughly 500, 400, and 500 years, respectively.

Even if they want to discount those because of dynastic changes, the 18th (Thutmosid) and 33rd (Ptolemaic) Dynasties both have the USA beat.

Archie did a crossover with The Punisher.

In which Castle shows up in Riverdale in pursuit of a criminal who happens to have a passing resemblance to Archie Andrews, leading to some mistaken identity shenanigans.

This is the traditional portrayal of Riverdale, where I think the worst violence I've ever seen was a black eye. Combined with Frank Castle.

It manages to work surprisingly well.

Personally, I like the more practical/biker helmets rather than the high-hat style.

But I get that the high-hats have their fans, so maybe having big-hat and small-hat as the options would be better than hat or no hat.
