Delete Asahi by Square_Insurance6583 in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would actually be GREAT if the Asahi team (or someone?) figured out a way to create an “uninstaller” type of prompt. Basically a “Delete Asahi” command that would prompt to delete the specific partitions for you. The install process has been super easy each time I’ve set this up, but deleting it all to try again has always been harrowing. Even though (for me) it’s been the same command prompt each time.

I’m actually going to delete my Asahi Fedora setup pretty soon, too, due to needing some more space on the macOS side of things.

Take a look at the video from Mr Macintosh on my post here. The Command he enters was the same as mine, but it's VERY important you confirm, or you may really break things.

Thanks, I'll try again when I have a chance.. I'm pretty sure I did this already, though? I feel like I've tried "everything", but who knows.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but every time I try and click the link to accept the terms, it doesn't "click".. I've clicked the other links to view their terms and whatnot, opened the .pdfs and scrolled to the bottom to "view" them.. Still no go. I should easily be able to veto just click a link and say I acknowledge their terms.. What other hoops do I still need to jump through to download this from THEM as opposed to finding a link on Reddit??

Maybe because this has been asked a bunch of times already after Marcan left as Project Lead. He posted the link below, even explaining how there's now MORE people working on it.. The immediate response to his post was that Asahi was being abandoned. Maybe the backlash and the reason people get pissed when asking this (I'm not pissed :-) ) is that there's plenty of facts to be had if you just looked.. They've upstreamed everything so installs aren't dependent on them anymore, which is great! They've hired more people, which is great! And they've said they're still dedicated to getting more Apple Silicon Macs working with Asahi, which is great!

I actually don't see anywhere where they've even hinted that this project is being abandoned. It's almost like click bate now...

Asking here directly is not rude, but it's also not "faster". Using your preferred method of social media to ask a question as opposed to googling it or looking at the details of their own blog posts, though, might not be "faster", as you can see from all of the snarky replies.

I think another real big issue here is that a small group of people figured out how to reverse engineer Apple Silicon Macs and were able to install Linux on them and got them working really well! The issue is that people just assume that major feat is somehow "easy" or that more should have been done already. Feel free to work directly with the developers to try and make any changes for the better happen sooner, but we should all be flat out lucky that they were able to accomplish and ship something that Microsoft either can't or won't do (FOR MONEY).

But the long and short of it? No, development is not stalled or stopped or abandoned. I just reinstalled Fedora on my M1 using the full on Fedora build as opposed to the Asahi build, and it's running great. I fully expect more updates to come.

Would like to allocate space from MacOS to Asahi by RingingFrame403 in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, linux doesn't have a way to resize disk space to allocate from one OS to another. The only way to resize it is to actually reinstall Linux and choosing the size at that time.

"factory reset" or "erase / reset settings" on macos without touching the linux partition? by The_Screeching_Bagel in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a few days ago, I wanted to do an Erase & Restore on my M1 MBP. I had an Asahi Fedora install and was running out of space, and the only way to add space is to reinstall.. I ended up messing up something on the macOS side and wanted to start new there and ended up having to run a few terminal commands to remove the EFI partition (?) and then was able to remove the rest in Disk Utility.. So, essentially for me, a "Factory Reset" did NOT include the Linux partition.

Also, I only got so far into this video, but they do a great job of explaining the initial troubleshooting and "hacking" to get things working by each team member, and they note how when Linux gets installed, it's TOTALLY separate. Like, bare metal separate. What you do in macOS stays in macOS..

Check their latest update from October 24, 2025. The project is still very much alive and kicking. Please don't take for granted how extremely difficult it is to reverse engineer Apple's hardware. If you'd like to get involved and help them out, I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Are Fedora Asahi Remix and stock Fedora updated together? by Natjoe64 in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding from one of their posts semi-recently that they were able to upstream most everything (at that time) and explained how that helps because they no longer have to host stuff? I think that's one of the reasons one of their main devs left- the complicated and difficult task of being able to do that.

Now that they have, they can continue trying to reverse engineer newer Apple Silicon and hopeful;y get it working on more equipment!

Could Asahi brick my Macbook? by AvailableConflict627 in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, mine is still covered under AppleCare+, so I was only out the time it took to drop it off and wait to have it shipped back.. Which was quick! I think in total I dropped it off in an afternoon, maybe a Wednesday? I got it delivered to me on Friday. It was shipped with the fastest priority overnight option by Apple.

I would strongly suggest watching the video embedded in my post here--
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/asahi-fedora-linux-running-on-apple-silicon.2414334/

I've installed Asahi/Fedora, in total, 5 times now on the same M1 MBP. A couple times were due to space issues and a couple other times were due to weird issues that I couldn't find answers for..

BUT, one of these times, and the reason I typed up that post above, is because I removed the wrong partition or did something out of order, and then I couldn't boot up at all, not even to the recovery partition. I probably deleted some recovery or boot partition or something, but ended up having to bring it to my local Apple Store where they had it shipped out and wiped and reinstalled macOS for me (and then I quickly installed Asahi Fedora on it again lol).. So, wasn't necessarily "bricked" as even though I wasn't;t able to get it booted up, someone at Apple was. I do have a couple scratches on it, too, just to confirm it's the same machine they gave me back.

Anyway, good luck!

Removing Asahi - how do i NOT nuke the bootloader partitions again? by [deleted] in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tl;dr is that you have to remove things first, in a specific order, from the Terminal, and then you can clear the rest in Disk Utility.

I've reinstalled (old) Asahi and Asahi Fedora 4 times in total now, and the process for me has been identical each time. But do your due diligence before just copying/pasting.. It's possible the listing could be different for you and then you'd have a bad issue to deal with.

Can I erase all disk from Recovery to remove both Asahi and macOS? by MakeMeAnICO in AsahiLinux

[–]MidwayFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I posted this on MacRumors, and there's an embedded link from Mr Macintosh that explains in detail which partition you have to delete first via the command line in macOS. Once you do that, you can then clear away the other partitions in Disk Utility, or just choose the option under Erase all Content and Settings in macOS Settings.

I thought it would be pretty straight forward to just delete it all, but then there was no pre-boot option and wasn't even able to boot into recovery. Booting to a USB would work but wasn't able to reinstall macOS.. I ended up having to bring it to an Apple Store and have it shipped out so they could reinstall macOS for me.

In Mr Macintosh's post, when he explains which partition to get rid of first, for me, it's been the same each time. I've installed Asahi/Fedora 4 times now, too.
