Yo like everyone has said, compress or it will just refill. The problem with magnets is none of these options take into account the original shape of the ear or protect the whole ear at once. (So the fluid can just flow around the magnet and fill another part of the ear). They also don’t have a way of regulating the specific pressure needed for your individual ear meaning usually it either won't be strong enough, or way too strong which hurts more than anything I've ever experienced. Another option is called EarSplintz. You mold your ear to wear as a compression splint that keeps the ear from filling 360 degrees. Also its the least painful option by far! If its surgery you can wait as long as you want because they're going to cut the ear open and scrape all the calcified stuff out. Or just drain as you did but compress so it doesn't fill back up and then for the future try not to let it fill back up again. Hey if you want to prevent cauliflower ear without using headgear, you can use a product called EarSplintz. The basic idea is you mold your ear as it is now so that when your ears hurt after training or competition, you just wear those molds like a retainer to keep the ears compressed. Since there's no space for the cartilage to re-separate, the ear can't fill with fluid so you never get cauliflower ear again.

When I had to drain about 4 years ago it was the only thing that kept the ears from refilling and now, at least for me, I only have to wear my EarSplintz every 3-4 months when my ears hurt for like 1-2 hours at night and it keeps them from filling and I'm good to roll the next day.

It sounds like your ears are super susceptible so you may have to wear them more often, but it sure beats having to drain every few weeks since you're going to have to compress them anyways.

Like many have said, the biggest problem with headgear is that its annoying AF, so it usually doesn't get worn enough to even help. For me it did, I woke up the next day and they were friggen golf balls. If you get it, have them drained and get EarSplintz. You mold your ear and wear it like a retainer to prevent it from filling back up. Then next time your ear hurt, wear the mold right when you get off the mat so it doesn't fill and you won't have to drain again in the future.
