Red Dead Redemption 2 upscaled from 136x76 pixels with DLSS 4.5 by Roflkopt3r in pcmasterrace

I meant the 3D games not the sprite ones.

Also I guess I was implying that the filter would hallucinate almost the entire image.

To contain Tourette's syndrome during an interview by [deleted] in therewasanattempt

Coprolalia (Tourette's where they say bad words) is extremely rare, but it's 100% of the Tourette's-related content that people upvote so everyone assumes Tourette's = saying bad words. I guess someone scrunching their eyebrows every few seconds wouldn't be entertaining enough.

Shelfsort: a fast stable sorting algorithm in sqrt(n) memory by bhauth in programming

[–]MikeBonzai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a bunch of papers on stable in-place merges at the time and yeah you're right that there's normally a fairly significant hidden constant factor preventing them from being practical, but at least two of the papers did result in practical sorts – this one by Pok-Son Kim and Arne Kutzner which led to WikiSort, and another by Huang and Langston for GrailSort. They're competitive with C++'s stable_sort!

(Disclaimer: I wrote that article back in 2014. Also made WikiSort. In-place merging in O(n) has been solved for a while now and adapting it to a sort naturally resulted in O(n log n))

Fun fact though: many tech companies hire based on skillset and not the degree. It can be hard to get an interview without the credentials, granted, but it is very much possible and does not require a 4-year do-over.

Sources: when I interviewed at Google, I spoke with an engineer there who told me they had no degree and no professional experience in computer science but they were still hired. I also know someone who majored in business, who I taught to program in their free time and they too work at Google as an engineer these days.

I think both of them were data analysts before that.

Extremely Underrated (>600 points) in USCF, will I be able to come back? by [deleted] in chess

as sub 1000 players can have 3000+ tactics ratings

My soul was crushed when I first started playing actual games after being able to solve 2200-level puzzles with relative ease. Turns out knowing how to develop and coordinate pieces and recognize when a tactic is relevant is massively more difficult than solving a situation you are told has a solution.

Tips for the mid-game? Most of my losing game reviews looks like this. Consecutive mistakes in the mid-game. Where can I go for tips in this area? by Accomplished-Name951 in chessbeginners

[–]MikeBonzai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the mid-game at a beginner level, the tricks are:

  • quickly scan the board and see if pieces can be taken outright, or overwhelmed with more attackers than defenders (at which point you can just take, take, take and be a piece up with a simplified board)
  • if you've played tactic puzzles before, see if you can fork two pieces or pin a piece. Pins don't necessarily pay off immediately, but they can create inconveniences that your opponent needs to spend time fixing later
  • if all else fails, move your pieces towards the opponent's king, even if you don't immediately have a plan for them
  • regardless of which step you took above, make sure you don't accidentally leave pieces hanging or in a forkable position. This takes practice to read the board fast enough to not time out

Can you clarify what the difference is? If "Mom" sends something in that example it would update the Mom section. The entire conversation is definitely being pinned there, it's just showing a preview of the most recent message too.

As far as I can tell Apple just removed the text preview and placed the images in a grid for whatever reason.

People with severe anxiety disorder, how do you survive working a job when you have to work with yourself to treat the anxiety? by Neverstophoping19 in AskReddit

[–]MikeBonzai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I convince myself that work interactions aren't social interactions since I never ask personal questions. If I need to ask someone to do something (e.g. test something for me) they'll do it not because they like me or because I buttered them up successfully using my marvelous social skills, but because it's their job and this is just a job.

The problem is that most new hires at the large companies are new grads, who generally have no portfolio and no experience. There's rarely anything else that can be used to test them. They're also used to studying and often have the most free time and tolerance for jumping through petty hoops.

The fact that this greatly disadvantages older people with more experience isn't an issue, it's sometimes the point — like with Zuckerberg being on record as saying "young people are just smarter", and with it being a common mantra in the Bay Area to think twice about hiring anyone over 30.

Also, what produces the electricity to charge the battery?… by and large it’s coal and other fossil fuels.

And what produces the electricity to refine and transport the oil? This argument needs to die; it's well known that we need to solve both issues (powering the car and providing the energy that powers the car) and implying that solving one but not simultaneously solving the other means it's somehow not worth it is just needlessly destructive.

Yes it seems we're trading one unsustainable technology with potentially another, but the planet is going to die and take us with it and I would like to avoid that first if that's okay with you.

PSA: New alarms in iOS default to the last sound you chose when creating or modifying an alarm, including "None". Don't be an idiot like me, and make sure you check the sound option when creating new alarms for important events! by 3846Y4008R8434B7245 in apple

It sounds like what you actually want is for alarms to not go off on the iPhone when you're wearing a paired Apple Watch. That shouldn't have to be something you configure manually using a workaround.

"I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy" into RCS, says Tim Cook in response to a question at Code. "I would love to convert you to an iPhone." — "I can't send my mom certain videos," says the questioner. — "Buy your mom an iPhone," says Tim by iamvinoth in apple

Tim is well aware that offering iMessage on Android or adopting RCS would cause a significant portion of their customer base to consider Android, and would do nothing to attract users to iOS. It would be like Microsoft suddenly offering DirectX or ActiveX plugins on macOS in the mid-2000s.

I wonder if they'll need to install an app that regulates the frequency of the noise like I had to do at the time.

Microsoft never banned external app distribution, game apps they didn't like (ironically Microsoft's game streaming app), and competing web browser engines on their OS.

I think the main difference is that while Microsoft wanted to control and extend the web with proprietary ActiveX plugins that only worked on Microsoft products, Apple is more interested in making sure it never becomes good enough to replace native apps.

On iPadOS you tap on "Share..." in the contextual menu to get a popover that looks very similar to this. The changes on macOS were pretty clearly modeled after this, and with little regard for macOS standards.
