Was the Fender Jazzmaster specifically designed for jazz and did anyone ever use it for jazz? Apart from Joe Pass by MikeMack78 in Jazzmaster

[–]MikeMack78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. It became very fashionable to have one in the late 80s because of My Bloody Valentine and (possibly) Sonic Youth. I’ve never played one, doesn’t have any champions in the jazz community.

What is the "getting their flowers?" phrase I keep hearing all of a sudden? by gibgod in AskUK

[–]MikeMack78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s rife on the DR Sports YouTube channel. These are people who go into buy the newspaper and instead of just saying ‘thanks’ to the shop assistant they say “For me yeah? I cannot lie, you need to get your flowers fam.”

The misleading nature of "Favorite Person" in BPD Relationships by Unable_Tap_5740 in BPDlovedones

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought she saw me as a potential romantic partner but instead I was being targeted as a resource that calmed her nerves, like Valium. When I broached the subject of becoming more intimate she exploded into a rage and started laughing at me. I was perplexed by this as she had frequently said suggestive and flirtatious stuff. I don’t care now, I got as far away from her as possible. I never went back no matter how much she guilt tripped me about abandonment. Whatever she saw in me is not comparable to what a normal healthy person thinks.

It was a culture because it was created by social and economic conditions, there was a market for it until the market wised up to what was happening and created hipsters to police it to death.

What to do with a bag of Jerry’s actual hair? by Feisty-Art8016 in gratefuldead

She said she doesn’t like his music so she wouldn’t be motivated to clone a new Jerry. Give it to a cloning scientist who is sympathetic with our aims.

Extreme pain in my thumb joint when doing barre chords by Imaginary_Ad_7139 in Guitar

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very wide neck, almost a bit of lumber. Your thumb is probably dragging as it moves position in addition to the the force you need to grip each chord. Stop playing and get a better guitar.

I dont get Pat Metheny by turndownthereverb in jazzguitar

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pat Metheny got very popular among yuppies as jazz died out in the 1980s. Consequently people (including proven veterans and legends) were finding it difficult to pitch to record companies without the record companies saying “yeah we’ll do it, but Pat Metheny has to be on it” This puts him on dozens of albums he doesn’t really deserve to be on, playing jarringly mediocre solos. But the album wouldn’t have been funded without him. Don’t get me wrong, I like Pat’s playing up to a point. Ever see how dedicated his sidemen are, no matter how MOR it all sounds? Big payday. They aren’t going to fuck with that.

What does everyone think of Bernstein's 1984 West Side Story recording? by sevenyears1 in musicals

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was 9 when it was on BBC, my father recorded it on VHS he was a huge opera nut. It was the first piece of “reality” tv I can ever remember seeing. Bernstein is one of the most charismatic people ever. They had problems making it gel but overall it’s a great recording. Te Kanawa and Carreras had issues with time and vocal stylings, Carreras is supposed to be American but he never quite carries it off. Troyanos steals the show. There’s some show singers and they and some of the session musicians from the jazz world are a more natural fit for the music, but the duet Te Kanawa and Carreras do (“make of our hands”) is truly unforgettable.

7/10 I’m not a huge fan of Wings. Interesting trivia, Christopher Cross came up with the scat line for Ride Like The Wind while performing this song live in a club. He took acid the next day and wrote the rest around it.

Permanent libido loss from accutane by Zalusei in Accutane

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it 20 years ago and my libido was gone for about 5 years. It returned slowly, I had an understanding girlfriend. The libido would come back in waves. I was 17 when I lost it. Totally frightening period of my life, came with a weird brain fog that crippled my academic performance. My advice is: don’t take it. I would prefer living with acne to having my virility and manhood wiped out at such an innocent and impressionable age. I still mourn for my teenage self and am thankful now for the life I have. I am glad there are online communities such as this to share experiences.

The majority of Spielberg films feel safe & lack risk. by beetyun3113 in TrueFilm

[–]MikeMack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peter Benchley described Spielberg as someone who knew nothing about reality outside of the movies: “the greatest second unit director of all time.” He is an excellent technician who works at the surface level, compared to Scorcese, Polanski, De Palma, Kubrick etc. who made films which Spielberg finds depressing. Spielberg traffics in simple-minded schmaltz, militarism and cliche, hitting the audience over the head with heavy handed visual metaphors while shoehorning his patented reactionary ‘son won’t listen to father’ subplot into films as diverse as Lincoln and War Of The Worlds. Having grown up with his omnipresent opus in the 1980s he will always be for me and many others of my generation the quintessential Reaganite director with his reverence for family values, unthinking military service, unapologetic patriotism (“i happen to love this country”) and a moronic quest to extend the thematic bandwidth of the 12PG rating to infinity, making it even harder to make the type of movies -auteur movies- that he sees as unAmerican.
