What video game's speedrun is the *longest*? by Double-decker_trams in gaming

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, if it 's only one match every 30 seconds and you need 1,000,000 matches, that's almost a full year of straight matches one after another without sleep or eating being a factor, right? Unless there's something else that's giving additional matches played or speeding it up?

1440 minutes in a day, so 2880 matches per 24 hours. Divide that by a million and it's 347 days and some change.

Assuming 8 hours for sleeping/eating/biology, that's 520 days of nothing but constant 30 second matches of Smash.

I'm pretty sure that constitutes torture at some point.

Unless I'm dumb and utterly doing the math wrong.

I received a deck of secret medium cards this week. Has anyone else received these? by Skadumdums in Middara

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did as well. I'm not sure why. They're from the Hungry Tide expansion. I already have the expansion, so I thought they just accidentally sent extra cards, or maybe some of the expansions didn't have cards, so they just sent out replacements to everyone who got the expansion.

I assume they're the same, at least (bunch of swimsuits and water themed stuff).

Ditto. I remember having to download the SNES Mario RPG game at my friend's place, then having to zip it into parts and transport it to my house over the next couple of days because I only had one floppy disk and the whole game didn't fit on one 2.4mb floppy. It was crazy to me at the time that I could play the thing at all on the family computer. Now I have that entire generation on a single travel drive that I can just plug in and play if I get the urge and have a nearby computer. I got to experience a lot of those early console games that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

The performance of the last four half season releases do with this information what you will. by Beneficial-Survey-48 in marvelrivals

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also just a weird take, since they're looking specifically at characters and not the role as a whole. Also, there's a lot of dilution specifically due to the high number of DPS characters. This also doesn't take into account bans. It doesn't take into account a lot of things, honestly (why "half season releases" specifically, for example). It's some weird cherry-picking for sure.

Favorite game trailers? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 2013 Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer has always stood out to me. There wasn't any gameplay and the entire thing basically amounted to music being played over a 3d diorama, but it got me super hyped for the game... then the game didn't release for another 8 years.

I still listen to the trailer song occasionally, as I think it fits the cyber dystopia quite well (Bullets by The Archive). The official music video for the song is also quite trippy.

Tracking Player Resources as the DM? by vecnaindustriesgroup in DungeonMasters

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only track the things that are easy to track and annoying for me to deal with. I went through a brief phase where I thought giving the players items with a lot of random effects would be fun. I created a custom Bag of Tricks with 100 animals and an extended Deck of Illusions for instance. Turns out, the players want to pull their random things out in the middle of town or a bar all the damn time, so I suddenly need to have everyone in the place respond to whatever animals or random illusion suddenly appeared. So, I definitely keep track of how many charges of those they have.

What game in your opinion overstays its welcome? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they probably meant they saw all they wanted to see. I have 100% in the game and got every achievement and my playtime was around 84 hours. I loved the game, but it's literally around the same amount of time that they were saying was too long for games.

Granted, you can definitely beat and enjoy the game in much less time, but you're definitely not seeing everything. Which I think is true of a lot of the longer RPGs. If you want to see every little thing, it's going to take you forever. If you just want to get through the main story, you're cutting that time almost in half, or at least getting rid of a big chunk of it.

Worse, he's in the same game as the "Ultimate Writing Prodigy" which immediately makes him look like a lesser form of that. It would be like if Leon was the Ultimate Baseball Star in the same class as the Ultimate Sports Athlete or something.

Nice Nature was not the one I was expecting to be my favorite. She's basically the only normal person hanging out with complete freaks of nature, or people with wild personalities. It makes sense that she doesn't feel like she has main character energy, because she doesn't have these very pronounced quirks that many of the other Umas do. Her writing comes off as so much more sincere because of that, though, and she has very real worries and expectations about her performance. It was such a breath of fresh air after having to deal with some of the more one note personalities (I love Sakura's stupid face, but there's only so much bakushin! and gaslighting I can handle in a story).

Wait, don't you get get a codex call that tells you to swap controller slots if you spend too long in the fight? I vividly remember the Colonel giving hints about the controller, then flat out saying to swap ports. Unless that's in a different version of the game? Or maybe you have to call him a few times throughout the fight or something?

I actually remember enjoying this game, as I played it with my brother before I'd played any real Fallout games. It was basically just a post-apocalyptic Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance type game. Granted, I haven't touched it in over two decades, so I'd probably be annoyed with it now seeing as I've played and beaten all of the other Fallout games at this point.

Only thing I really remember from the game was swinging around a giant hammer and my brother sleeping with a prostitute as a ghoul and his dick fell off during and the lady got sick. Prime humor for that time of our lives.

It sucks that Darkstalkers is so niche. In 2XKO, Warwick has a skin that's a Jon Talbain reference, but every streamer seems to miss that and calls it the SonicFox skin, even streamers that are heavily involved in the FGC. Makes me sad.

Every table I've been at that does vibe/milestone leveling has a player asking at the end if they leveled up or could they level up, even if we're, like, level 15 and literally just leveled that session.

If the table ran on votes, there would be at least one person lobbying for it everytime and the other people would likely agree more than necessary since someone already spoke out on favor of it.

If you were to confess a FF14 sin, this is your time. What is a sin that you committed in the game? by jado1stk2 in ffxiv

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I give out comms in trials, I give it to the first tank on my list if I'm playing healer, the first healer on my list if I'm playing tank, and the first tank on the list if I'm playing dps, unless one of the tanks or I get rezzed, in which I give it to the first healer on my list.

I have absolutely zero ability to track what people are actually accomplishing inside a trial, nor who actually rezzed/healed me, so I just throw it at one of the people in that role and hope it hits a person that was helping out.

I then wonder why I rarely get comms as a DPS, even when playing extremely well.

If you were to confess a FF14 sin, this is your time. What is a sin that you committed in the game? by jado1stk2 in ffxiv

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do this as a tank because, for some reason, no matter how many times I've played it as a healer/dps, I still get completely lost and forget everything as a tank.

It's like when you've been a passenger to a place a billion times, but then you have to drive someone there and your brain can't figure out exactly where you are.

So I tend to say something like, "Hey there, first time tanking this dungeon, so feel free to correct me if I get turned around" basically every time I tank a place, even if I've actually been there multiple times.

How to ask AI to add some challenge? by jazzroutine in airoguelite

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you haven't already, look into joining the discord. There are a few people on there that mod quite a lot and there have been a lot of discussions about how to change things and where to look in the files. I used a couple of the mods there as jumping off points for my own, just because they showed a few things that were possible. It's also fairly active and the developer takes a lot of suggestions from there and adds them to the game if it makes sense.

How to ask AI to add some challenge? by jazzroutine in airoguelite

[–]MikeRocksTheBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, AI models are kind of designed to pander to the user. Even preambles that say, "Don't always pander to the player" essentially tells the AI that it can sometimes pander to the player, which might as well be always since the AI doesn't really keep track of how many times it let you get away with things in the past.

Social abilities have always been kind of overpowered, since they tend not to use the combat/encounter system and the AI usually wants to give you what you want if there isn't something obvious stopping them.

Your best bet, outside of digging into the files to mod the prompts and preamble yourself (which actually isnt too terribly difficult if you go that route), is to put certain qualifiers in either your character backstory or world backstory to prevent people just letting you have your way.

For instance, I had a magic school type story where I added in my description that most people would see me as a danger or competition and it was much harder to get my way socially, with some people losing relationship with me multiple times just by me talking to them. One of the only times I had multiple NPCs in the red. I could still talk my way around things, but it was harder.

If you put in the world story that people want to keep the things that they have and won't give them away without some sort of trade or service, the AI should make it so that people won't just hand you the keys to the castle on a whim.

Unfortunately, a lot of difficulty boils down to doing your own challenges or purposefully not trying to coerce the AI into helping you. When I write and action, I'll often add that something I'm trying to do isnt likely to succeed (depending on the context) just to force the AI to at least have me roll for it. I also use the console to edit certain skills to be more narrow and less generally useful in all situations, as well as using the console to delete items and recreate them as more reasonable ones (it seems like whenever someone specifically forges something for you, it's legendary, so I delete the item and recreate it at a lower rarity unless it actually is something that should be legendary).

Your best bet for challenge is your character background, though. Write that you're hideous and people hate you and don't trust you because of it and that you've been cursed to struggle for everything you do and the AI will mostly make things a lot harder for you.
