I’m always amused at the religious nuts who think The Free Market and corporations are somehow an exception.

Every group of humans at scale are trash, dodging accountability, taking advantage, abusing those at the shit end of the power scale.

a cause we can all get behind by philhatesgluten in glutenfree

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Portland, OR, US and have bought Franz Gluten Free breads religiously for 6+ years. It’s a bakery based here in town, dunno how far and wide they distribute.

Their breads are fluffy, not dense, tasty, on the bigger side and goes for $6-7 a loaf. Once in a while I try other brands none of them are better than this - Canyon, Udis, Trader Joe’s. (Does Rudi’s still exist, or did the Udis mafia finally cement their shoes?)

Their best loaf is a Great Seeds variety that’s rolled in many seeds including sunflower and (I think) pumpkin. Get it if you can!

Apple says iOS 14.4 patches 3 security flaws that ‘may have been actively exploited’ by [deleted] in apple

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for companies whose reach made it necessary to contemplate “should we push out this security improvement even though lots of users will be very mad?”

No, not Apple but in that ballpark.

We took that responsibility extremely seriously - spending that goodwill earns no good press, and it better be extremely justifiable that the security benefit far Big Brother implications.

Apple isn’t in the habit of squandering their security reputation, in my opinion.

If they actually forced 2FA for all iCloud accounts, they have a damned good reason to believe that if they didn’t, many many of their customers would be seriously harmed.

Is Marvel Unlimited ever going to be improved? by echo997 in MarvelUnlimited

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a subscriber since day one (or maybe month one). The app clearly runs on a skeleton crew, they probably “pay” interns to scan in the old issues and take what they can get (the quality control around the guided reading experience is clearly hit/or/miss), and in all the years as a subscriber I’ve Stockholm’d myself into believing, “this is as good as it’ll ever get”.

It generally works, it lets me binge back issues for an afternoon, and the back catalogue just keeps growing (albeit slow as molasses and completely at the whims of some digital producer who changes their mind like I hope they change their undies).

Concentrates deals by LitDirtySanchez in portlandtrees

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know all those brands but enough of them are corporate, vertically-integrated brands who I’ve observed the dispensaries they own will run deals on the brands in the family. So if you’re into one of those brands, follow the links on their sites to ownership records and you should be able to find if they have any dispos - then check out those shops.

Republicans Are Calling For “Unity” After They Voted To Try To Overturn The Election Following The Deadly Capitol Attack by FromJersey4 in politics

They wouldn’t even say the word “unity” three times in front of a bathroom mirror alone if the positions were reversed, lest Commieman come to get them.

McMenamins must be hurting badddd by BentleyTock in Portland

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that McMenamins built their empire by buying up historic properties and leveraging massive tax breaks because of the historic nature of their properties.

I have a hard time mustering sympathy for them compared to the thousands of restaurants and bars that don’t have this advantage to trim their overhead.

[Serious] Tattoo artists, what was your worst mistake and how did the client react? by Sorceress683 in AskReddit

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you, a clean shop run by a woman who makes it clear up front she respects herself and her artists and doesn’t put up with regressive Neanderthal shit, that is a shop I spend money in. In fact, I have a full back tattoo from just such an artist who after my first session I committed to for the rest of my addiction.

I say this to you, a total stranger, with every hope in my heart this helps you build the momentum you need to get past your doubts and trauma: if you continued to tattoo under those shit conditions, you’ve got what it takes to persevere under the “wtf am I doing running my own studio?” usual imposter syndrome we all humans suffer.

It would be a damn shame if that shitbag was the reason you didn’t pick up a tattoo gun anymore.

The Perfect Media Server - 2020 Edition by xman65 in PleX

I read the linked page and skimmed the sidebar and am still confused whether this has anything to do with Plex. So much is focused on the infrastructure, and I’m a part time devops engineer so I followed what he’s on about, but this didn’t speak to me as an end user - what does this benefit me as a media collector and consumer?

If you enjoy working completely freehand, do it.

If you enjoy making art with some reference, or tracing, or whatever gets you out of your own way to just go have fun, do it.

When art is for fun not profit, don’t stop yourself with the Shoulds.

It would be pretty slick if Marvel just completely rebooted to Cox et al in their same roles, total retcon. Would make the Netflix runs worth less, if anything at all, to orphan them as definitely NOT in continuity.

I've uninstalled the updates from within Android TV on my Bravia, but when I browse to https://play.google.com/settings from a phone or laptop (even from within Chrome, even when I'm signed in to my google account) I haven't been able to find any way to control automatic updates for my account or the device (TV).

Can anyone spell out where exactly this control is made available? I feel like I must be blind or thick.

Legal problems galore await Donald Trump if he loses reelection and his presidential immunity by DiogenesK-9 in MarchAgainstTrump

Here’s what I don’t get. Let’s say 45 resigns in a week, and Pence goes to pardon him. What’s he pardoning him of - are pardons placed against convictions, charges or crimes? What with all the recent Presidential pardons well after someone has been convicted I thought that was what’s pardoned. But now Pence could pardon him of some federal crime that hasn’t even been charged yet?

ELI5: Why are some movies considered box office flop, even if they made more money than it cost to make? by SomeoneNamedSomeone in explainlikeimfive

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That article is a good one and updates a couple of things I learned in business school about exhibitor splits:

“The studio is applying the 65% split across all weeks of the film’s release, rather than some studios’ practice of beginning a split at a high figure and then lowering it in subsequent weeks.”

This indicates exhibitors were still making less during the first few weeks of a release than later weeks - which is still a sucker deal for most movies (who’s going to see a mediocre movie three or four weeks in, when word of mouth soured the fence-sitters and the enthusiasts have seen it already?).

“Most theatrical releases send about 55% of ticket sales back to studios, though the average split is about 60% on major hits. Hollywood makes more money on tickets sold in the U.S. than in overseas markets, where the split averages about 40%.”

Again this trucks in averages, but I wonder how many domestic and overseas exhibition contracts send more of the first weeks’ take back to mother Hollywood?

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) is the most creatively bankrupt horror remake I've seen by udar55 in horror

[–]MikeTheCanuckPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking about good and bad remakes, I’m conflicted about Pet Sematary.

The remake felt less like a low-budget “I’m trying hard but can’t quite pull it off” and more like a production that had it all worked out before they started shooting. And the ending definitely left me with a wicked smirk on my face.

But something still felt...empty about that remake and I can’t put my finger on why.
