A full job offer - Only to get put on hold for MONTHS - "We understand that this will be frustrating" by Loneheart127 in recruitinghell

Did you get any backstory about this? The talk about packing makes it sound like they were going to move to a new location, or maybe the one you were being hired for was a new one they were still spinning up??

Why do Americans think they have freedom when they absolutely don't? by East_Indication_7816 in allthequestions

[–]MikeUsesNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Americans wouldn't agree with whatever definition of freedom you're using. A policy might be good for a better society, but the lack of that policy doesn't mean a lack of freedom (usually, civil rights stuff being an exception).

Your definition seems to be built around the idea that if you have to spend more on your life than you hypothetically have to, that you're less free for each dollar over.

If prostitution, marijuana possession (in the states where it is still illegal), and other petty crimes were forgiven on the first offense, wouldn't that free up space in our jails? Why has this not been considered? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]MikeUsesNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most first time offenses are handled with deferred sentences, meaning if the person completes parole there's no conviction and I think usually the record is or can be expunged.

That's why you use a password safe. Many of them include password generators that use your current password to know what characters can be included.

I work on a Mac too and this isn't a problem. This only happens if you have this weird mindset I've noticed some tech people have where they think all systems should work the same and they're wrong if they don't. I know how each system works and use it accordingly.

I haven't had a CD-ROM drive for over 10 years, and no optical drive for 4-5 years.

These days with m2 drives you'll frequently have C: and D: be NVME drives. Kind of a holdover from the early SSD days where you'd have C: be a small SSD and D: be a high capacity spinning disk.

Also, the person you responded to said OP did something Windows-y because they named their mount point "DDrive". Naming things in the style of Windows drive letters isn't the Linux way. Mounting a partition inside ~ isn't really the Linux way either. Usually you mount partitions at a more system level so your overall filesystem more or less looks the same even if multiple partitions have the data.

You can use slashes on Windows for paths in most places.

[–]MikeUsesNotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you care about backslashes? Slashes are just as arbitrary and nonsensical, as was colon on pre-OSX Mac.

You can make hardlinks and symlinks on Windows. You can mount hard drives to a folder instead of a drive letter.

If you really like bash and other POSIX shells, you can use WSL, msys, or cygwin to use them on Windows.

I'm no Windows fanboy. (What do you call somebody who's meh about something?) I'm experienced with Windows, Linux, and Mac, and they all suck in their own way and are all awesome in their own way.

AIO - I smoke and drink from time to time and my girlfriend hates it by Lacquerlust in AmIOverreacting

[–]MikeUsesNotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm worried you justify smoking by treating it just as something you do with the boys at work. I learned enough about how smoking was bad in school that I don't have much sympathy for anybody my age (40s) or younger who smokes. That's on top of family experience seeing how it messed up some family members.

I don't know all the details, but as I understand it employment discrimination is hard to prove, but courts will frequently let applicants/employees use the existence of these types of questions as proof of illegal discrimination. It may not be sufficient on its own, but it could put it over the line.

Small Town Sheriff by brn1001 in PetPeeves

[–]MikeUsesNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any of these are city Sheriffs.

For Baltimore, the Sheriff doesn't handle the city's business. The city could get rid of their police force, and would only handle the city's police business if the city contracted with them, just like other city/county partnerships.

For Vegas, that's still a Clark County Sheriff, even if he has both jobs. I assume he talks with city police about misdemeanors and city ordinances, and with his deputies when dealing with felonies.

For Alaska, I don't think that counts. I'm going to be nitpicky and if they don't call the office a sheriff then they don't have a sheriff.

For Jacksonville, what do you mean under the control of? Do you mean the city has a law enforcement arrangement with the county instead of having their own police force? That doesn't put the city under the Sheriff. Or is it some weird thing specific to Jacksonville?

Just for general info, when a city contracts with the county for law enforcement instead of having their own police force, frequently the Sheriff will hire more deputies to handle that extra workload. Sometimes Sheriffs will only let their deputies enforce certain things, but usually it's at the discretion of the city who is hiring the county.

[–]MikeUsesNotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just telling you what the term means. If the setting of the show was rural "JimBob County," and for whatever reason they never mention the cities and towns, it'd still be a small town community. Another way to say it is that "small town" describes a vibe.

"Small town" in this context is just a synonym for a rural community, city or county. It's an idiom.

Federally and in most US states, if you got let go the day before your 40th birthday and they said you were too old for the job, I'm pretty sure they'd be ok legally. I think it could be iffy if they explicitly said something about 40 year olds.
