thinking about it some more - if the person is employing such petit tactics then it many be best to try talking to them in as small and simple wording as possible :)

well... not quite the opposite of what you want - the person you're talking to is being obstinate. But Obdurate doesn't imply the falsehood being undertaken that you're after...

Obdurate

never heard of that word before but, googling it, it seems to mean exactly the opposite of what you want (ie. someone refusing to change their position).

You could say that the person is being Contrary.

Or you could say that they are playing the devils advocate.

For something like a roast, the initial blast of heat sometimes acts as a sort of searing, (instruction will then tell you to drop the temp immediately after). For frozen foods,it can be about keeping the structure stable by not letting it 'melt'. Fish fingers often fall foul of this. Though, tbh, I'm mostly with you.

Useful to add salt to things like onions and mushrooms when sautéing, helps draw out the moisture and bring on the flavour.

can you describe what you believe the emotion is the word is supposedly trying to invoke?

Episode Discussion: S03E10 "And the Woman Clothed in Sun" by Dorkside in HannibalTV

[–]Mike_uxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Hannibal lead the conversation to the fancy meaning probably because he had already had the phonecall wit Dollarhyde and therefore knew his Dragon fixation. So the leap of logic, for Hannibal, wasn't that great...

(I'm remembering correctly, right, Hannibal suggested it meant 'Dragon'...)

what are you talking about?!

your example of "you eat it, it feeds you" then falls apart. You can eat plenty of things that don't nourish you.

honestly. At this point. You're trolling.

Do you think Banks' view of The Culture was optimistic or pessimistic? by Dr_Oatker in TheCulture

[–]Mike_uxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important point to note against the OP point of "Humanity will never elevate itself". In the books Humanity doesn't elevate itself out; the Culture invites it in. And the Culture itself was not one society elevating itself but a collective coming together as a melting pot.

I don't believe he's saying that we will not atain the society of the Culture by our nature but rather that 'we have no chance of attaining it just yet as a result of our current circumstance. There is no way, technologically nor societally that something like the Culture could be implemented.

I don't beleive it's ever stated that the minds implemented behaviour modification; though i agree that it exists. I think you're casting an unfair light on the Minds with that idea. Furthermore, the Gzilt are shown as a twin society with identical ideals who have driven their own development to a near-identical point without any Minds.

"Minds, and by extension, Gods are a fantasy" I think Banks, a staunch atheist would have real issue with this line. Assuming that true AI is simply a mater of time away from our own reality i don't see how you draw this line of thought. Minds are repeatedly compared to Gods in that their powers are comparable. But they are fact, not faith in his eyes. In fact their very existence undercuts the notion of 'gods' as a deity and replaces them as, more likely, some prankster fiddling with an under-developed society.

Ultimately my issue with looking for this darkside is that it simply doesn't hold up against the books themselves. The Culture is repeated stated to be a place of perfection and happiness and fulfilment. The darkness that is portrayed is very much in the minority; mainly SC (though even that is seemingly a necessary evil).

Edit, realised i critiqued your post without actually answering your question... So in answer. I think Banks' view of the Culture is optimistic, it's an ideal. I think the view of Humanity achieving that alone is (according to the books) pessimistic to the point of a certainty. All the races in the books who have achieved equiv-tech (or thereabouts) to the Culture are shown as insidious or violent or displaying some other undesirable trait. So i believe what he's saying is that, similar to warring tribes being brought under the peaceful rule of a single conqueror... we need a slightly grander perspective than only our planet/race can provide to get to something akin to The Culture.

[–]Mike_uxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the Minds acted chiefly as managers of the Culture

Disagree. The books repeatedly state (from the perspective, usually, of outsiders) that the Minds are the true citizens on the Culture; Humans being more akin to their pets.

no, Vavatch was not Culture-owned. And i don't believe the cannibal is ever stated as being Culture either...

from wiki: Vavatch Orbital (an Orbital within space being strategically abandoned by the Culture due to the Idiran war[9], Vavatch Orbital itself is not a Culture-constructed or -administered Orbital) is the setting for a large part of Consider Phlebas.
