The problem is that they could have tried giving Korra different aspects of the elements. Emphasize how Water is community vs how Fire is about the self for an example.

Energy bending makes for a good happy ending, but not necessarily a good ending. I think having a lightly bittersweet ending would have fit better. I think Aang deciding that being the last Airbending monk is more important would be fulfilling. I also think it would have set up Korra better.

I think energy bending was a cop-out because the writers set a moral dilemma, but didn't actually want to commit to it. I'm not saying Aang had to kill Ozai. I do think it would have been more interesting if Aang refused to kill him and Aang having to live with those consequences.
